What extras do you have for your Lansky?

I just got my Lansky Deluxe sharpening system in the mail. I have been looking at the "catalog" that comes with this thing and they have a lot of really cool things that you can order. What extras have you ordered? I have my eye on the sapphire stone.

I bought my Lanksy awhile back and can't remember what they called it. But it's a five stone set with normal (non-diamond) stones. When I bought I went ahead and bought the universal screw on base as well as a sapphire stone.

After 4 years use, if I had to purchase again, I'd skip the sapphire. When I'd use it seemed to dull the edge that I can achieve with the ultra fine (yellow handle) stone, as a result I don't use it very often. Generally I just go from the UF to a strop.

But I highly recommend the base unit. It packs into the case and with the addition of a "C" clamp I can mount it anywhere. But even without the clamp you can still use on any flat surface.

Thanks for the heads up with the blue sapphire stone! Its funny that you mention the c-clamp base.

P.S. I apologize about the messy table.

Hi, i share the reaction of Mr. McCord : the blue sapphire stone need to work to be perfectly flat, wich was not the case on mine, bought soon after a 'deluxe' box. Reflattened it on severals diamond benchstones, it works great but need practice : no need to put more than the weight of the stone and better result with quick movments. With good speed and progressively less weight on handle, the yellow 1000 grit stone works beautifully well. All my knives have now edges mirror polished, finished with strops. I love this Lansky system, whose allow great control about the exact amount of metal you retire, wich is not always the case with an edgepro system.
I'm now interested in convex edge . . ;)

This is exactly what I looking at. Just when I got a decent sharpener, I read about convexing. There just aren't enough knives!!!

I purchased the diamond hones as well as the saphire stone the saphire stone can take your sharp edge on step further IMO.

You should see mine. No worries mate.

Like I said the sapphire seemed to be more hassle than worth. The yellow UF is as high as go and often will skip it if the edge is decent enough without it.

Any of you use the honing oil that comes with the kits or do you sharpen dry? I have the deluxe kit as well as some diamond hones as well...standard stones are fine for softer SAK blades and I have been maintaining those on a deluxe crock stick set by Lansky. When I get some free time I need to get the angle system out and sharpen a handful of dull SAKs. I too never had any luck with the sapphire stone...don't always use the yellow uf either...I like a toothier edge on SAKs since i used them a lot for work.

I've been using the deluxe lansky system (non-diamond) and I find that the oil is necessary to clear the stones of metal as they get clogged. Have yet to find an easier way to clean these stones. My only other beef with this system is that reprofiling an edge and sharpening from start to finish can take a ridiculously long amount of time. Reprofiling s30v without diamonds is a nightmare...

That sounds familiar. I used a 'Deluxe' Lansky set (standard hones) and the ONE diamond (medium) hone I had supplemented it with, to re-bevel a ZT-0350 (S30V). I wore the standard hones out, they aren't flat anymore. And the medium diamond hone pretty much gave up what was left of it's useful life (it was well-used before I started). Took a very long time to get it done. I've since retired the 'Deluxe' set, and replaced it with the full diamond set.
