Looking at the Benchmade 180 outbounder pics on the respective thread, I have been thinking of ixed blade EDC blades that are a great combo of utility and self-defense. So, what is out there? Just curious.

By the way, whoever designed the Outbounder ought to be treated to lunch. the blade looks liek a self defense blade to me, but with that handle it looks like a sheeple friendly EDC! A very good idea!

I'm not sure if there is a certain price range you want to stay in, but If I were going to buy a self defense knife that is pretty easy to carry I would go with the Darrel Ralph Arc-Lite.

The sky is the limit on this question! Well, keep it reasonable. I am just curious as to a)what is out there, and b)who got the utility/self defense combo just right! Score extra points for sheeple friendly looks that don't hinder performance :) I'm not lookign to buy, I'm just curious as to what is out there.

Hello,

As far as I am concern I have try a lot of fixed blades. (Fred Perrin's of course...)

Theses days and for a little more than 2 weeks I am carrying a Livesay NRGS Executive.
Newt knows how to grind and heat treat a blade for sure!

The NRGS is flat ground and drop pointed 3.5 inches fixed blade made of... 1095 of course !

Time to rediscover 1095 especially Newt's one !

I am much more than happy with that knife as my EDC and really recommand it to you.

Oh I forgot to mention the price... You can find it around $50 !!!
ANd it got also a Kydex sheath !!

Well this is a really excellent utility knife and an outstanding self defense knife.
Did I mention that it is also a Beauty and a Beast?

Unbeatable !!!

cheers,

JM

with any luck, my cold steel hai hocho will be waiting when i get home from school today, so maybe i'll post about it or recommend it. i bought it for $20 on cheaperthandirt.com so maybe even if you try something else you could get it as backup

The Buck Nighthawk would be a good choice. It's fairly small, very stout, fairly inexpensive, and feels GREAT in the hand.:).

Thanks againf or the rgeat suggestions.

Here's a couple more things to add to the criteria.

1) 4"ish blade length (think of a fixed folder)

2) Pretty. No "blactical" blades (black/tactical I mean!). I would love to have a nimravus, but the blac/black/black isn't sheeple friendly, and to me quite boring now.

 ;) :D

Crayola,
I have always liked the "Jagdknicker or Alpine"
pattern knives. The Germans have used them as trench/fighting knives.
Puma used to (may still) make one where the sheath was detachable from the beltloop for other carry. The one pictured goes a little over 8" oal with a 4" blade.
Regards, Greg

I STILL say that the Buck Nighthawk is a GREAT choice. Just chop a couple inches off the blade, and grind-off the black color on the blade, and you'll STILL have a GREAT knife.:).

get ya a CRKT companion (about 30 bucks) and an on scene tactical custom sheath (also about 30) and imho ya got the best fixed blade carry possible for under $100 (and, in many caces, better than knives costing in excess of $100)

I carry a 4 inch Gryphon M10 in a kydex sheath.It
serves expertly in any task I give it.

This little beauty was just given to me as a gift. My buddy Rusty Sherrick is gonna make a neck sheath for it.

I can't complain (don't think I would either) because it was a free :) It's a well built knife that's quite affordable! :D

It's not much in the self defense area but I think the Benchmade 100 RR is a great little fixed blade and the price is awesome. (~$50)

Sounds like it would meet all your needs except the defense part and the smaller blade (but I think you could defend yourself with it if you had to).

The knife I carry when I want a fixed blade self defense/utility is my Dozier NY Special. Easily my favorite fixed blade. (But I have a Blackwood on the way so we'll see...)

Both are pictured on my web page if you need to see them.

cpirtle,

just now I visited your web site. – Great work! Your sheaths as well as your site.

Thanks Horus!

I'm into computers for a living and knives & working with my hands for a hobby so it serves my passions well :D

Crayola, go visit Greg Lightfoot and pick up a C4. I bought mine in April this year and just now started putting it into my EDC. Blade is just over 3" (BG42) and it has blue/black G10 scales and IWB concealex sheath. I love this knife.

In a couple weeks I'll post a pic of the knife Eric Elson is currently making for me. It's mostly my design (my first) and I think it would fit your req's as well.

Dale.
