Hello,
I have just started to collect Spyderco folding knives. I want to start looking into some fixed blades but dont know where to begin. I would like to know what type of fixed blades are popular with Spyderco owners. Thanks.

I would venture to say the Moran. Because it is awesome and it is a spyderco. I got my brother-in-law one for christmas and it never leaves his side. He says it is the sharpest knife he owns. And the new sheath is really versatile.

If you are a "true" Spyderco fan, you have to the original Moran, the current Moran and the upcoming drop point Moran...

The Nimravus Cub looks rather interesting and got a great review from Fred Perrin over in the Review forum.

I must wholeheartedly agree with all of the posts thus far. All knives mentioned are a must have for a Spyderco collector as each knife mentioned is a top shelf factory fixed blade, especially the Morans. I have both of them.

Well, this particular Spyderco folder accumulator has a whole new favorite fixed blade.

Check out Himalayan Imports forum. I just got a 20" Ang Khola Khukuri that weighed in at 3lbs, 5oz., and was beautiful to boot. The "Khukuri Man", Uncle Bill will be in Nepal for a month or so, so you can safely cruise the forum for pics without an immediate threat to your wallet. The service is everything you've come to expect as a Spyderco customer. Unbelievable "bang for the buck".

It's not as practical as the other suggestions, but I've got a Randall 14 and a Stag Trailmaster for that kind of thing.

Good luck!

I recommend an FB that is similar to or larger in size to your folder and is 1/4" thick. This way you can cut delicate or tough items.

The Moran, Nimravus Cub, and Fallkniven are great if you just want the same width knife all the time. I recommend the Busse Basic #3 for a thicker knife of the folder size and the 12" Sirupati or Ang Khola, 9" Chesapeake Special, or Kumar Karda if you really want a medium sized knife.

Incidentally, I've been wanting to play with the Nim Cub and Fallkniven line. The drop point Moran is tempting and the old Moran does great in the kitchen.

Bob Dozier make an excellent fixed blade at a practical price.

Thanks to all for your very helpful responses. Will keep you informed what I am able to find in Bangkok. Would prefer to "feel" any knife in my hands before making a decision.

It's sitting at home. The big brown truck just dropped it off. But since I must wait until tonight to see it after it's 5 month "gestation period", you must wait to hear about it....

BWAAAHAHA!

PS - No foolin.

OK, I'm home, it's in hand, and it's the perfect fixed blade for the Spyder owner (or anyone else for that matter):

Custom Tim Wegner fixed blade Pro Hunter in Rob Simonich talonite.

Everyone asked about it. Everyone wanted to see it made. Well, Tim and I went and did it. And it IS what one would expect. It's beefy, it's brawny, it's sharp as a son-of-a-gun.

I've been playing with the Tek-Lok system for about an hour now, and I've settled on the small-of-back position as my favorite. But it goes anywhere, so I'm sure I'll find plenty of ways to carry this bad fella.

I'm a happy boy!

PS - A new, improved C48 is being dreamed up as we speak. Every concern and wish voiced on this forum has been heard, and is being considered. It's going to be a thing of beauty - and a beast!

Wow Brian! That is one great lookin' knife!!!! (wiping drool off the keyboard)

Any idea if they are gonna put something like this into production?

As far as I know, there are no plans to go production, or even make more customs. Tim did a couple in talonite and a couple in CPM440V just to see what a fixed would turn out like.

It's SO nice...

Ok, you've managed to make me jealous. Unfortunately, I live in a state where fixed blades are frowned upon, and concealed carry of such is almost automatically taken for intent. (what kind of intent I'm not exactly sure, but intent nonetheless.) So, for now, I'll just satisfy my cravings with a variety of folders. (And the few fixed blades I just have to have, even if I can't carry 'em.)
Turning green,
Dave
