HI -O- Guru's of Sharp Stuff!

The question is simple if you were playing in the sandbox what currently available fixed blade knife you you want on your side. The reason im asking is my Son is stationed overseas and his B-Day is in 5 weeks. I have been looking at The Extrema Ratio's and the Sog Tech bowie but there are so many choices I do not want to make the wrong one. What ever the choice is I want it to be strong enough to dig a hole, cut down a tree or open a can of WOOP-AZZ if needed and not fall apart. $300.00 to work with.
Thanks

well...the Tech Bowie is a good knife.

A Busse Hell Raor fits the bill also. MSRP is $287, and it comes in a tan finish. It certainly qualiies as whoop-azz, and wont fall apart.

Hey trooper thanks for the Hell Razor suggestion that just went to the top of the list. I had not seen that knife before but man I like it.....

Alright... after reading the newest issue of Tactical Knives Magazine and also the reputable posts on here, I have come to conclusion concerning your post to recommend these blades.

Crawfordknives.com www.crawfordknives.com/DRAGON KNIFE.htm Dragon fighter - pricey at like $350, but OH-SO-AWESOME KNIFE!!!

Busse Hell Razor for around $275, and -if possible- get him a folder with like 154CM or S30V steel. www.bussecombat.com/knives/

MOD Mark VI Stinger http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=MD954 and again a folder afterwards, that's probably easy to open but is not assisted or automatic... like a Benchmade Osbourne 940 with the D2 steel.

Last, but not least which would be tied for the last knife, would be the Benchmade Presidio on the cover of Tactical Knives mag, and is the knife I've been looking at since it's news release. shown in link below:

Personally, if you could scrounge up some more cash, I would really try and go for the Crawford Dragon as that would penetrate a lot of anything that those bastages where wearing in Camel-Land... if not, the things I hear about the Busse's are insane, and they're awesome. The Presidio 155 and Osbourne 940 folder would be a great combo for about $300.

I sincerely hope my suggestions can be used to help your son, as is the hope of all of us that make comments...

Tell him, "Thank you" for his service, and that I'll be over there soon myself, :-)...
Goodluck, God Bless America...

I have to wonder... Is this to be a knife to stick someone with? Or are you looking for a good utility knife?

My point being: After 4 tours to the region, I don't know anyone who even knows anyone who has had even a remote reason to stick anyone with their knife. That leaves utility. I carry a Simmonich Salish horizontally in a kydex/teckloc sheath in the small of my back. It is of a size that it is very comfortable for everyday wear. Around 4 inches, S30V steel, G10 scales, retails for around $200. It is also extremely durable, and easy to keep sharp. It doesn't have a "gunna-cut-ya-suckar" look, but it is perhaps the most usefull fixed blade knife I have owned in 19+ years of military service.

No trees to cut here. Got issued an entrenching tool for digging holes (when engineers aren't around). And thankfully, I have a slug tosser to handle the hostiles.

One of the tricked out "combat" knives would be fun for the first couple of weeks, but the size and discomfort of carrying such a knife would see it in the foot locker befor too long.

Now... having said all that, if you really wanted to have a sweet looking hand sword like many mentioned in previous posts, you might as well have one while you're here! And I am sure your son would cherish it as a gift from his Dad. You're doing right by asking around this forum, and what ever the final decision, at least it won't be a piece of china-crap.

Happy shopping.

The Hell Razor, if i am correct will soon be taken off the website and a new knife will go up. So if you want to order it DO IT VERY QUICKLY, IT COULD BE TAKEN OFF IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

I agree about A Busse.

I also strongly agree with jemebly about the ~4" blade size for all around utility.

I've EDC'd that size for several years now and it is quite comfortable.

If not for a specfic purpose, the larger blades get heavy and cumbersome right quick, especially when it's hot.

I've never even SEEN any sort of knife magazine, so I can't tell you what they say the latest and greatest is. LOL

Get something from Wauseon, OH (Busse or Swamp Rat) and rest assured that your son will have the best. They are sister companys.

I just don't think he needs the biggest of the best.
