Rechargeable, Either somekind of Streamlight or a Maglite.

I would go with a 4 cell maglite. My rechargable streamlight runs for 1 hour on a full charge, this might get me through one night on the job but at home I want my lights to get me through an extended period of a power outage. Like ten years ago when an ice storm left me without power for 11 DAYS!! That box of batteries and a plain old maglite sure came in handy.

Do you want it for a back up sort of light? Or a light to use all the time, or both?

As a safety light I would recommend a White LED Lightwave 2000, http://www.glow-bug.com/products/fl_lw2000.html with 3 lithium AA for a backup. It will run at full brightness for 36 hours, and give off useable light for about 80. The lithiums will stay fresh for 10 years. It is about as bright as a "normal" 2 C cell flashlight. My second choice would be a PAL with a lithium 9v, but it doesn't give off as much light in normal mode, and isn't suppose to be used in "turbo" for more than a min or two. But the light is smaller, but it will use up it's 9v in storage (2 years) since it stays on all the time at a really low level.

If you want a light you will use on a regular basis I would recommend a rechargable. That way you don't have to worry about batteries. Maybe a streamlight stinger or a mag (with a carley lamp).

A word of caution: if you do NOT use your flashlight often, then DO NOT buy a rechargeable!

NiCd's cannot hold a full charge for extended periods of time, and if you leave a charged flashlight on your shelf for a month, you will find it almost empty when you will need it in an emergency. 0n the other hand, leaving it on "trickle charge" constantly will ruin the batteries' performance.
Rechargeables are great if you use your flashlight a lot, but for occasional emergency use, get a good quality alkaline or lithium cell flashlight that will not let you down when it matters the most.

I think a 6V Lantern would be good. I had one sit in the garage for 4-5 years and it was still bright as the first day. And you get good runtime. Even with the high drain bulbs like halogen and xenon.

I have a Colemen flourescent lattern that uses 6 D cells. It's great for area lighting. Not as bright as a white gas light though.

I think maybe one like this UKE3C would be a good choice.

If it is is your only light, I would want something that is bright and has a decent burn time (i.e., no DL123A's), so 2+ Cells of either C or D batts.

This one is lighter than a mag and fully submersible.
