Marc, I just took delivery of two of the 3AA Luxeons. It is a bit larger than we are accustomed to (been using a AA Mini-Mag/Opa-Lec for an around-the-house light), but it puts out a LOT of light. It is 27 yards from my back door to the wood line. This light puts out plenty enough to illuminate the wood line and clearly show whatever is there. Rather amazing for someone like me who judges LEDs by his ARC AAA and Opa-Lec NewBeam.
Quality appears to be standard StreamLite; IOW, excellent. One gripe, and you could say it a half of a gripe. One light has a pleasing soft blue hue, and the other is that horrid cat-piss yellow-green. I do NOT like that hue, but one of these is for my dad and it doesn't bother him, so all is well.
This light is too large for EDC unless you have a backpack or don't mind looking like a repairman. I'll wager, however, that it is going to become the #1 household light in this dwelling. The wife has already filched it twice to look for a certain pair of shoes deep in our closet; it literally puts the two D-cell Mag-lite she's been using for that purpose in the shade.
The SL-20 and Stinger are still the primary emergency lights, sitting there on trickle charge, and the Opa-Lec is indispensable for my modeling uses, where I need a good, even light that isn't too bright for peering into the corners of mechanics and fuselages. But for general purpose around-the-house use, this 3AA Luxeon is going to hard to beat. I already know I'm going to need another one.
I chose the Luxeon over the bi-level TaskLight for two reasons; more brightness, better overall quality of light, and no switch manipulations to get the light where I want it to be. Remember, this is mainly a fixed-base light, to be used at home or from the tool box. It is really too big to stick in your pocket.
I have found that most artifacts designed to accomplish more than one purpose generally fail to do anything really well. That's why I have an ARC AAA and E2 for EDC...
