What folder good for urban self defense or combat?

Any folder that feels right in your hand, that has a sharp edge, is easy to open with either hand, has a strong lock, offers some sort of notch or cutout to keep the knife secure in your hand(you don't want any cut tendons...trust me on this), and finally is of legal length in your area.

There's a bunch of folders out there now that meet these requirements. Check out the Benchmades, Spydercos, REKATs, etc.

My best recommendation is either the Benchmade AFCK or one of the new, full-sized Axis locks. They are all solid and perform famously.

The Gunting, big grip, small blade. Does allow you to control the weapon better. The grip ergonomics are good, the lock although new, looks real good.

The problem I have with it is, although the "spoon" clip will allow you to spin it or flip it if you desire to, it is also very high profile. Added to which, it is not subdued but polished, which will draw more attention. The knife does not ride as low as it could, but sits high.

There are just times when I do not want to scream, "I have a clip carried folder in my pocket."

At times, a shirt might move or a jacket, and someone get a glimpse of it, I try to keep a low profile most of the time with regard to what I am carrying. It does not mean I wish to conceal it, as much as I wish to not draw attention to myself and anything I am carrying.

There are considerations to what Law Enforcement will perceive if they see a regular old pocket clip and they know about clip carried folders and they see the "spoon" and a high riding folder. "Brazen" might be the word I would use.

Don't ever flaunt. If you flaunt something, people will inevitably check it out.

Then there is the other side of the coin, what might be a glimpse of a clip will be a full shot with that large, polished clip on the G. Criminals have eyes too. Since clip carried knives have basically exploded on the scene, they are looking for them as much as for a handgun that prints under your jacket.

Don't give up the element of surprise. It is a new knife that alot of people like, hopefully they will tweak it in these areas to make it a tad more low profile.

I carry a few different things. Emerson Commanders, the fastest folder in the Universe, so far. Opens coming out of the pocket. A good thing when your life is on the line.

Hoping to get an Emerson SOCFK soon, Wave Opening on that as well.

Crawford Custom WORTAC. Full size.

Hoping to get a Crawford Custom Kasper Fighting Folder. Full size.

Possibly a Kit Carson Custom "Flipper" in the near future, with a 5 inch blade.

There is a consistent logic throughout the choices, there must be some type of integral guard or something along those lines in the knives I carry now. Some index there and even a slight effect of a guard. The WORTAC has such a grip that looking at it, you might not realize just how secure it really is.

All wonderful knives.
