Hi guys and girls,

What folder is more heavy duty? The benchmade 950Rift or the Benchmade 520 Presidio?

Probably about equal, but who knows for sure. The presidio's blade is a little thicker...

I have both. My vote goes to the 950...since getting a 950-1 (black G-10) my 520 hasn't seen a lot of pocket time. This Osborne design is terrific and
one of the smoothest Axis models out there, AND it's much easier on my pockets than the 520 with those ribbed aluminum handle scales.

I Work in a store that sells both and for just being straight up heavy duty the presidio gets my vote

I only own the Presidio, but think it's a tossup. I think these days I'm leaning more towards G10 over aluminum, but that's mostly a personal preference. I do think I'd give the Presidio a slight edge for its full backspacer, though.

And where is the hard use?;)

I consider hard use to a little prying and cutting branches with one or two hits.

Obviously the 520 because of the thicker blade. To me the 14205 comes to mind too. I like the 14205 for its thicker blade and the G10 even more.

I never had a look on the Rift. If the tip is as strong as on the 520 or 14205, the thinner blade might have its advantages to cut branches or that kind with a slash.

I do not know, if the 520, is stronger, but it sure cuts, and I think, it feels good in the hand. One of my all time favorite BM's.

I'm retired but have never attempted to cut down trees with a folder. ;) Most of my folders, including the 14205 (and I agree it's a great knife) get used for household chores, and the 950 is a terrific knife for chicken, fish, and veggies. On hikes, it's been used for halving sandwiches, cutting rope, opening plastic...and it sure LOOKS like it cuts as well as my 520.

While I love the 520 as well, I've been learning to appreciate G-10 more and more as my favorite choice of handle material, from a "looks" perspective it sure looks nicer longer than aluminum scales do.

...and on the 14205, not much can beat it for a HD feel, it's a tank!

I won't comment on the blade integrity, etc, but if I were to do hard work holding my knife for an extended period of time, I'd want it to be holding the Rift. That handle is one of the best Benchmade has ever made, easy. Grippy, very comfortable. And for this reason, I would personally choose it--I know it's not going to get loose when I get tired. I love the rift. One of Benchy's best new designs.

Thank you very much for the info fellows. I placed an order on the Rift and one for the 940.

Much appreciated.
