what folders make for a good throwing knife?

I want a folder that is tough, but I also want it to work as a throwing knife. I'd like it to be 3 1/2 inches or shorter and not above 80 dollars. I have been thinking about the kershaw shallot, it looks tough and like a good knife in general. Obviously if it will be thrown it will need to take some abuse so it has to be tough. what do you guys suggest?

I wouldn't recommend throwing a folder. It won't hold up to the abuse. I cannot think of any folder that will withstand being thrown into a tree 1000+ times and still locking up properly.

Cold steel American lawman. There is a russian knife designer on youtube who said he's thrown it over 1000 times and it still locked up perfectly, he was very impressed. Maybe someone will have the link for it.

for practice I would use something more conventional, but for self defense or impressing my friends once in a while I would use a folder. (it is extremely illegal to have throwing knives away from your property where I live)

Why would you throw your weapon in self defense?

In an attack if you have distance to throw, you can try to get away from the situation

haha, I just wanted a reason that sounded better than just impressing my friends once in a while, you and I both know that throwing knives isn't exactly good for self defense (especially if you miss).

I wouldnt throw the shallot, handle is too heavy and blade to thin. I wouldnt throw any folder really, but if I were going to throw a knife the wasnt meant to be thrown itd be something I didnt like. And a blade that would be strong but a softer metal since throwing causes harder steel to fracture.

Hi INTR3PID -

Not trying to be rude -

This is similar to asking what type of dump truck is good for drag racing.

Knife throwing is a lot of fun, but you probably will be better served with an inexpensive ($20) set of throwers.

Throwing a folder will be frustrating (they are not balanced for the task) and it will most likely ruin the mechanism.

Throwing fixed blade knives that were not designed for the task of throwing might break the blade, or jettison the scales etc -

Definitely a lot of fun though, look into some cheap throwers and get you a nice hunk of tree stump to throw at.

best

I say get a tomahawk, lot more fun to throw than I knife, IMO. And can be had in the $30ish range from Cold Steel. Buy 2 and share with a buddy

I don't recommend throwing folders...nice ones at least. I have a couple of those $1 knives you can find at a certain superstore, and a beat up frost, that I throw just about every day (no actual throwers anymore, just got back into it). Within 12ft or so, I'm quite consistent, and they've held up pretty well...even if they didn't, it wouldn't matter. Tip busted off one of the $1 folders, but I reshaped it.

Really though, if you want to throw knives, get the ones advertised as such. The steels, and weights are usually different. Someone else mentioned a hawk. That seems like fun.

Sure, you shouldn't throw a folding knife... but I was once a teenager and younger, and I tended to throw my knives at trees.

In my case, I carried a Schrade CH7 (ClipHanger) for over 15 years and threw it at trees thousands of times.
It never fell apart, but I did see my friend's knives fall apart.

In my experience, if you are going to throw a folder, make sure it's either really light (less inertia), or really strong.
A fixed-blade would have been a much better choice, but I don't EDC a fixed-blade.

I'm not advocating throwing a folder, but if you're going to, you might as well make an educated choice. :o

Would that Russian knife designer throwing the knife be Andrew Demko? If so, I certainly hope he was very impressed.

This one maybe? :D

Just kidding, My answer is none. No folder I've handled is balanced for throwing unless I'm missing something.

Does anybody else think dump truck drag racing sounds cool? No offense to mqqn.
personally, i would actually like to see that, but I get your point. Thanks for all the feedback, it has helped alot. I just saw some kids throwing folding knives on youtube, didn't realize how impractical it is.
