Hey guys. So I am thinking about getting a folding knife, and was wondering what you guys would recommend. I'm looking for something that would be under $50, preferably manually opened with thumb studs, and for its blade to be 3 or 4 inches long. What kind of locking system should it have? Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

Kershaw Leek. I had one, gifted it, felt a gaping hole in my EDC rotation and ordered another one literally ten minutes ago. Assisted opening, which I'm generally not a fan of, but even a Luddite like me can't hold that against it.

Otherwise, the byrd line has really served me well. The Meadowlark 2 is really a fantastic knife and you can spend the rest of the money on booze.

Ontario RAT-1.

other is ESEE Zancudo (but it is too small for me), Kershaw Leek, Kershaw Random Task II

Stay away from the Chinese crap. Save a few more bucks and get something nice like a Benchmade Griptilian.

I do not have a lot in this price range. However, I recently purchased the Kershaw injection, both the 3" and 3.5" blades and surprisingly I love them. For a little more money$65-$75 range I would take the Benchmade mini Presidio over the Mini Griptilian any day of the week. I actually have the more expensive standard mini Presidio and it is one of my all time favorite knives. It just works and feels awesome in your hand. Kershaw is where you want to be under $50 though. You do have so many more options and the upgrade is worth it from $75-$125 range. If your not comfortable spending that much atleast consider the $50-$75 range. That is still a huge difference in upgrade. If you have questions on any particular knives feel free to email me. I have had quite a few over the past few years. Started in your range and then the fever pushes you towards insanity!!!! Good Luck.

Kershaw Injection 3.0 or 3.5
Ontario RAT-1 or RAT-2
ESEE Zancudo
Kershaw Blur (you can remove the assisted-opening mechanism)
Ka-Bar Dozier Folding Hunter (regular or large size)
Benchmade Mini-Griptilian or Griptilian (a bit over $50, but sometimes the prices fall below that on the secondary market)

The Buck Vantage line is great. You can have S30V and G10 for $65 or 12C27 for about $40. After a couple hundred flips, mine just falls open with the lightest push.

There are several. A Cold Steel Voyager with the Tri-Ad lock can be bought for around the $50. Kabar Doziers are even cheaper and well made for the money. The Kershaw Injection is a nice folder. Just need to see which one you like best and go for it. There are many more but those are just a few I think are a good buy for the money. Good Luck! Kevin :D

Kershaw Thermite. BHQ and GP has them in stock right now. One of the best bang for the bucks out there.

Hmmm, kinda surprised nobody has asked you what tasks, possibly including self-defense, you intend to use the knife for as well as the environment(s) you expect to encounter during use. Office? Woods? Exposure to salt water? .....

Need some parameters do we not? Your inquiry is so general it is impossible to get specific, as a knife is.

If I am to point blank answer your question I need to leave it at: I recommend SHARP knife, with a GOOD lock...[DUH]
