I recently bought a butt pack from ranger joes for my ROTC unit's Spring FTX at Fort McCoy, and I would like to know what goes in it. I know i can ask my ROTC friends up here, but i want your opinions too. This will be for use on hikes with friends as well and not just for the FTX. Thanks for any input!!

It just all depends on your mission requirements.

I've been recalled several times and issued all ammo as I wanted for high stress situations. Those times the only thing in my butpack was para cord, fire starter 1 pair of socks and many many boxes of 5.56 ball. But then again I had a couple of extra gas mask bags full of frags, 2 claymores and 4 LAW rockets along with 13 loaded 30 rd mags.

On a "normal" ftx I normally strip down a couple of MRE's getting rid of the worthless packing so just the food I want is in one bag. Then a couple of pairs of wool socks in seperate baggies (foot powder pre added), some para cord, fire starter of some kind and a poncho as a bare minumum. You can dump in anything you can think of to make life more comfortable.

I've learned to try and keep 72 hours worth of "stuff" in my butpack and LBE when on a deployment. That way when you get seperated from your ruck (and it will happen) you are a a happy trooper.

Just remember whatever you stuff in your butpack you will be humping. On a normal deployment without water my web gear weighes somewhere around 35-40lbs. I've gone and purchased a Black Hawk H harness with a CamelBack pouch and have a 1000z PackTeen tucked in there. The BlackHawk harness is way ore comfortable carrying that load than the standard issue LBE or LBV.
