What gives?

Okay so I've been watching Busses lately ever since a thread in whine and cheese of all places brought the unusual sales strategy to my attention. The only Busse I've handled was an AK-47 that I did some work for but it seemed to be a well built beast. So I'm watching. The thing I've noticed is that in the for sale section there are a pile of Busses on the block including some that I assume are probably pretty hard to get, sets etc. So what gives? Typically in the sword world when stuff like that is being unloaded it's either because of an economic downturn, or there is something better coming out. Thoughts?

Hey Triton, welcome to the Busse forum!

Their circumstantially was a thread about Busse turnovers that was started last night, with plenty of input from Hogs and piglets alike: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=428713

There is a lot of discussion as to why you see so many Busse blades on the exchange these days. Some reasons probably include:

  • Someone likes the look of a blade, but decides it's not their style once they have it
  • Someone buys specifically for resale...see the thread I referenced above
  • Collecting Busse can be addicting...sometimes you just look at your collection and realize you need to downsize
  • People are unloading parts of their collection for $$$ for other knives

From the thread I referenced above, there are a few who think that some people are purchasing strictly for the resale markup. The fact of the matter is that demand determines price which is why you'll see some pieces sit.

Hope you stick around! PS - Jerry said something about an Extravaganza this Saturday! Check out http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=427878

Triton:

I ordered a few Busse's about a month ago from the last extravaganza (the left overganzaaa) and the charges are just starting to hit my credit card. That prompted me to sell a few of my Busse's to cover the new purchases. I'm willing to bet there are a bunch of others who are starting to see some more Busse's on the horizon. This *may* be part of the reason. See this thread as well, that was started yesterday:

Good points Deadhead Archer, I'll add another.
I recently sold some knives because every once-in-awhile I look at what I have and think I could due with less, plus, I enjoyed these knives and thought I would give others the same chance (if I start selling my birds beak Steel Hearts, you know something is really wrong!).

I also put up a couple of rare ones for trade, trying to find something I didn't have and someone else the same. Now, have I made a profit on Busse knives? Yes, that is because I look at collecting for the most part as a investment and a hobby. I also have lost money a couple of times, due to my pricing mistake, but you know what, the same guy gave me a deal later so it all works out in the end, usually.

Triton, welcome. Do not mistake the number of knives in the exchange as a turning away from the man and his product. Some of us have had some personal economic down turns, some have too much of a good thing and want to spread the joy and others fall into the catagory of those who hog up blades only to turn them out a week later at a big mark up (don't buy from them if you don't like it, I don't). There are many reasons why we might part with our blades, but it isn't because we are dissatisfied with the product or the company, that is for sure. I am sure many are dumping stuff for a chance at one of the MOASKs that Jerry unveiled, that is truly an unprecedented piece of coolness.

I have found that it is more than just about the knives. I enjoy the knives because they can be used and used hard, they are high performance tools. However, I also enjoy Busses because they are usable collectibles. You can get them, use them, and resell them without any loss (usually)

I started buying them because I wanted the highest performance knives that could be found, I continued buying them because it is an enjoyable hobby. I will continue to support Busse Combat because Jerry is a standup guy and good people are part of this forum (and Busse Combat in general)

I have sold Busses in the past, but only because I was buying more Busse knives. When I first started buying them, I was buying everything I could find, that I had missed before I was collecting. After a while I wanted to focus my collection on one segment (variants) so I sold some of the ones that didn't fit this focus.

This is one of the busiest manufacturers forums on the internet, and it is because Jerry makes this place enjoyable. We buy his knives because they are enjoyable to use, we stick around because of the fun ;)

Don't be concerned when you see a lot of Busses for sale, (if you follow those posts the knives are selling and selling quickly, which indicates that the market is still strong) Be concerned if you ever see that this forum is dead ;)

:D:D

Thanks for the welcome all. Also thanks for the insight. I wondered, recently I passed along a few items because I was not convinced about the heat treat and I wondered if somebody knew somethin... I thought it unlikely considering the reputation I've seen and the amazing warranty policy. I cannot believe that Mr. Busse is going to give that guy a new skeleton key after what he did to that knife. That is simply AMAZING!!! I'm going to go check out those other threads. I keep telling myself I do not REALLY need a battle mistress or a hell razor... do I??? Now what are these MOASKS of which you speak... hmmm

I just stopped lurking and started collecting some in the last couple months. Outstanding product, very addicting. Talked to Jerry himself on a warranty issue the other day, very straightforward, exactly how I think the owner of my newest, favorite knife company should be. Keep up the great job!
