During a late night discussion with some friends who are equally as ignorant about knife design as I am, we were stumped on the original purpose of the Desert Jack. Knowing it was a military overrun, we figured it was made for the same tasks that the Ka-Bar Marine knife was made. A general do everything utility knife. Does nothing well but is fine for whatever needed doing. The two points we were stuck on is how heavy it is, and Why is the blade coated? In a heavy use knife, the coating is going to wear of anyway, and if it is so heavy, it might not be something you would want to walk around with all day, especially if you are carrying a load of military gear.
None of us are military, we don't have that experience. The knife was designed for the military, so the choice to carry the weight is up to the user, as far as civilian carry goes. But other than durability, unless that is the reason, what choices might have gone into such a heavy knife for general utility? We were thinking, the extra beef might make it usefull as some kind of entry tool.
Does anyone use their Desert Jack? What for?
