What "good" is a Swamp Rat Desert Jack?

During a late night discussion with some friends who are equally as ignorant about knife design as I am, we were stumped on the original purpose of the Desert Jack. Knowing it was a military overrun, we figured it was made for the same tasks that the Ka-Bar Marine knife was made. A general do everything utility knife. Does nothing well but is fine for whatever needed doing. The two points we were stuck on is how heavy it is, and Why is the blade coated? In a heavy use knife, the coating is going to wear of anyway, and if it is so heavy, it might not be something you would want to walk around with all day, especially if you are carrying a load of military gear.

None of us are military, we don't have that experience. The knife was designed for the military, so the choice to carry the weight is up to the user, as far as civilian carry goes. But other than durability, unless that is the reason, what choices might have gone into such a heavy knife for general utility? We were thinking, the extra beef might make it usefull as some kind of entry tool.

Does anyone use their Desert Jack? What for?

Desert Jack is light for it's size. It isn't very thick. Has a nice penetrator tip. Handle is very comfy. Utility size and shape blade. Differential heat treatment.
Coating doesn't seem to be as thick as current blades have. Almost all military blades come coated these days...

The Jack, much like it sounds, is a "jack of all trades" kind of knife! She is very similar to the Busse BOSS Jack or SHSJ, but with more unique ergos. She can do it all except heavy, heavy choppping. You will be hard pressed to find any one single knife to be more useful in the field.

I always wanted to hold one but never have. Pics next to a Boss Jack would cool to see if anyone has both.

I use my Desert Jack. It is a GREAT mid-sized user. Very light and nimble and has become my favorite carry knife for a walk in the woods.

You want a coated blade in a hostile area for the same reason you can't wear mirror-lensed sunglasses--reflective items are a target, and not authorized for wear in combat zones. Busse/kin knives can be on the heavy side, but it's not a huge deal IMHO.
