Hi Guys,

What grind does the BK16 have?

I am looking at some photos of the BK16 on an online catalog. On these images the blade looks like it has a grind similar to the BK2.

On other images it really looks like a flat grind....

I prefer a grind similar to the BK2 - resulting in a sturdier blade overall....

Some early ones had a saber grind. KA-BAR acquired a laser etcher, and Ethan decided to go with a full flat grind. The blade had to have a flat side to roll stamp it, hence the earlier saber grind.

That's the best answer I've seen on this topic.

I've seen multiple times in the forums that Becker heads seek out the saber grind version. Is that because they prefer the saber grind on the 16 or just because it is a collectors item?

Has there been any talk at all of Kabar offering a saber grind version in the future?

Both actually. Some like that it resembles a mini BK2. Ethan prefers full flat grinds. The 16 would have had a full flat to begin with, if KA-BAR would have had the laser earlier.

No, KA-BAR won't be making the saber grinds anymore. There are some sabers floating around, although they're getting more rare.

Nice history lesson on these knives and very cool animation.

I had a feeling Maestro Becker had a reason for the full flat grind. If that is what he wants for the design, then I'm all for it!

Thanks for the info and confirmation Warior!

I had a suspicion that the newer ones had the flat grind since their rougher coating looks a lot like the one my BK2 had...

Ah........ The Saber Grind 16. My Favorite.

Ethan actually did want a really high saber grind on the 16. Almost a full flat but not quite. Didn't make it into production tho. They went with the full flat like on the 11.

Any way you grind it, the 16 is a great little knife for multiple tasks.

A saber ground D2 16 is one of the Beckerhead's wet dreams, but we'll make do with how it is :D

Not really... I am perfectly content with my Saber 1095CV 16. I like my Flat-16 as well though. I like my Clipped Flat 16 as well though... I don't need it in D2.

The current full-flat-ground 16's are plenty stout, and they cut well. I really see no reason for a saber-grind on a knife like this - all it would do would be to decrease cutting performance. If you manage to break a FFG 16, you're doing something dumb and it's your own dang fault. :)

I really don't care which grind it is, I just wish it fit my hand, haha.

I really like the look of a good saber grind and I love the feel of that grind on my bk2 and 9. This thread got me thinking more of what I'll really be using my (brand new and tan scaled) bk16 for and with what I have planned in the near and foreseeable future, I think the full flat grind makes more sense. Especially since I got this knife to be the little buddy for my bigger and harder use knives.

there was a very fair priced used FPR Saber 16 on the bay with an azwelke sheath and large tech lock a few days ago... as you can imagine, it didn't last very long. i wonder if anyone from here grabbed it?

Good Info. & graphics Warrior.
BK 16's are a very popular knife so they must be right!

well, not everybody has the same wet dreams ;)

that's why I have both versions :D might have to order some D2 and give it a whirl.
