I remember on another thread (I can't find I searched and searched :( )
someone said the stones for the edge pro's grit are sized differently, and in reality the 1k stone is more like 8k. What are the grits for all the stones?

The Shapton Pro 8k is just slightly finer than the EdgePro 1k stone. Every manufacterer has their own grit rating system.

That's a pretty good ballpark reference, but as a cautionary note I've seen other charts that rate them as being a bit lower grit than that. From what I've read, and considerable use, think the OEM 320 is roughly equivalent to a 1000 grit Japanese sythetic. The 1000 is probably a 5k J at most. I also happen to have the following stones custom cut for the Edge Pro- Naniwa Chocera: 400, 800, 1k, 2k, 2k "Green Brick", 5k & 10. Shapton Pro: 120, 320, 1k, 2k, 5k, 8k & 15k. 1 x Synthetic Aoto. 1 x 150 grit Ohmura. Plus a DMT XC & a C mounted on custom plates for the EP. In my routine use over the years I think the 320 EP is roughly 1k, with the 220 EP being somewhere in the ballpark of 500 grit J.

I certainly don't want to say my opinions are definitive, but I base them on long usage and several references I've read online. For a better answer you should probably simply ask Ben Dale. For whatever reason I've never bothered!:p

I've been considering some of those custom stones, or even just the DMT XC at the very least. I would love to hear about some of your opinions and experiences with these aftermarket stones. You know, stuff like comparing Shapton 120 to Edge Pro 120... Naniwa 1k to both Shapton and EP 1k... which brands and grits were worth the extra time and money and which were not... etc. Also, you wrote that the DMT's are "mounted on custom plates." What do you mean by custom... the fact that they're 2 inches wide compared to EP's 1-inchers? Thanks.
