What grit sandpaper?

I want to get rid of the coating on my Eskabar, and I was wondering what grit sandpapers to get.

I have heard people mention ~600? And i just want to know if that would be enough, sounds kind of rough still to me. Also any brand recommendations would be great too

BTW I am aware that 1095 is carbon steel and is rust-prone, but I have plenty of bare carbon steel blades, and I know how to take care of it
 
3M or Norton brands are excellent.

Regarding grit, anything in 400 to 800 range should do fine (your estimation of 600 is right smack in the middle of that ballpark :thumbup:). The finer grits will load up more quickly, but can be kept fairly clean if used wet (or periodically rinsed). Try the higher grit first; you might find it'll get the job done fast enough, and you won't have to be as concerned about the heavy scratching from coarser grits. If the work is going too slow, then take a step lower in grit.
