I have been giving a lifetime gaurantee on the knives I sell. Do you guys do this? I hope I dont spend my retirement years fixing the knives I sold years earlier. So far there has been no problems. What is the norm for custom made knives? Bruce

I give a lifetime guarantee also but with a couple of clauses----I dont guarantee against obvious abuse! or shrinkage in natural materials as this will always happen(I will fix this for a small fee)also my guarantee is for as long as I am physicaly able to make knives....Bruce

Hi Bruce!
Mine is identical to beknives. For as long as I am able to repair/replace the knife. One stipulation that must be made clear to any and all customers, is that the maker has the final determination of what constitutes abuse. You'd be surprised at some of the things that your blades will endure, in the hands of their new owners. Most are very good about it, and don't abuse their knives.........but there is always someone out there who will.

I think the people that buy them are very responsible and wont abuse them but what if they are given to their nuckle dragging son in-law who has no appreciation for a quality knife. Im not too worried about the staight knives but a folding knife will be used more and stands a greater chance of wear. Is normal wear covered? What about stripped out screw holes? People like to take things apart. I remember Bench-Made knives will not warrenty if they have been disassembled.

Hehe. Benchmade will warranty things which have been taken apart, as long as they are put together properly. If they are, Benchmade would never know it was taken apart - the only way they know is if you damage it in the process.

That, I think, is the essence of the warranty; cover normal use, but not when someone does something stupid. If you make folders and someone sends you a bag of parts with a note asking you to put it back together, it should be at their expense. Same goes if someone decided to try their hand at filework and scratched the blade up, or anything like that. Also, as was noted, certain materials are prone to certain problems; as long as the maker makes this clear to the customer, it is perfectly reasonable to charge a small fee for fixing probelms resulting from this.
