Thanks to all that commented on my recent thread, because I'm after a practical knife that will get banged and dropped I've decided against ivory. As I mentioned in the other thread, synthetic materials are of no interest to me, nor is antler. Specifically I'm going to get a Fontenille Pataud Sport as my new hunting knife.

As much as i Like it I won't get Ironwood as it will likely fade into a dark blob with heavy use and exposure. I do also like boxwood but mine stains too easily.

At the moment I'm leaning toward Walnut

Any suggestions for other heardwearing wood options?

I find that walnut is a great classic choice. I'm also fond of Osage Orange. I have an early Fiddleback Forge knife that Andy made for me out of Walnut and Osage, and it's only gotten more lovely with a warm patina over the last 14 ot so years as the orange has mellowed against the contrast of the brown. It's a very special knife in my pretty sizeable collection.

I like their Juniper burl, Pistachio and Snakewood. I’m really a sucker for Snakewood, so that’s what I recommend.
Thanks for the reply.

I asked the same question of them and just got a reply. They suggested ironwood and ebony for durability. I'm not big into black handled knives and the ironwood as nice as it is I can't see holding its colour.

I am considering the three you suggested.

Hard choices!

Snakewood is EXTREMELY prone to cracking. Probably more than ivory.

If you got ironwood on the light shade of the spectrum, it will darken some buy not turn black. A sealer/finish with UV blocker will help minimize darkening a lot.

What ever wood you choose make sure it it stabilized. Raw wood can chip and splinter and that's not fun.

Any suggestions for a sealer/finish that will do this but won't make the knife slick in the hand with blood etc?
