okay guys here is the question---- last night i decided to try to make some chain damascus out of some timing chain. i got the first six inches welded and then the chain just fell apart. what can i do to prevent this. the weld held but the chain behind where iwas working on it crapped out.

Try Using a ''Backer'' I Tried the same thing and the Result's Sucked so I tried a 1/8 Piece of 1095 fro a ''Backer'' then welded the Chain to the ''Backer'' then Fold in Half and Twist it Tight Fair Blade But Without the Twist the Pattern is Just So-So !! Good Luck!!

To answer your question about the chain all you did was stretch the links behind the weld when forging thus over sizing the holes and thus letting the chain fall apart as it was moved...Ask How I know this:D as I figured it out when it happened to me...

If you can spot weld the pins it should help stabilize the chain for you and hold it together.

There are chains and there are chains. I have never had much luck with the ones with big air gaps and thin side joiners. If you can get a hold of a type that is basically a smoth outer edge and a wavy inthernal edge which is made up of all flat links and small pins, I found it was easyer. Sorry about the description.
I know there are men out there that can weld the big holes, but I gave up because I was using a borrowed forge and wanted to get a result each time. I will trye again now I have a forge.

I also use a lot of chainsaw chain. I always clean the grease of first and then tap the sides in to drive out the gaps and slag inclusions.

If you want to send me an email I will be able to send a couple of pic of an 8 inch billet ( chain saw) I made a couple of months ago showing the steps.

With what "very" limited experience I have with this I have found that Harley primary chain welds up fairly easily along with chainsaw chain, an old timing chain from a Chevy truck didn't weld worth a darn. Different metal composition in the makeup of the components of the chain is more than likely the culprit, or so I surmised.
