What happened to my car!?! (paint issue)

I went to take a look at my car this afternoon (parked outdoors in a driveway leading to a parking lot) and to my dismay, found this on my right front fender:

i don't understand. I'm uncertain that this might be a hit & run, or vandalism, as the body is not dented or marred in any way. it looks to me like a 4" split in paint, and the paint is curled up but still attached. underneath is the bare metal, from what i can see.

has anyone ever seen paint peel like this? would that be an accurate description of what is happening? i have not been involved in any accidents or made contact with other vehicles/barriers/lampposts... could this have anything to do with.. weather changes? we are slowly egressing out of a bitterly cold winter in massachusetts...

btw it is a 2007 nissan 350z, black.

i haven't touched it yet. I'm not in a position to get it fixed just yet, and i'll need to drive it sparingly throughout the next few weeks. i wonder if there is a temporary fix anyone might recommend to prevent any corrosion/damage to the existing paint and exposed metal beneath?

this is a real bummer :(

Hi Midget -

Someone hit your car, and the body panel flexed, breaking the paint coating.

The body panel returned to it's original shape to some extent, leaving the paint damage.

I feel for you - it's hard to have anything nice that you have to leave out in the public; many people in the world just have no respect for others or others belongings.

I think it is a very fixable bit of damage - tell your insurance company that this happened while you were not around the car. You should also make a police report when things like this happen to officially record the place and time it happened.

Best regards -

Paint is splitting it happens more on black cars/trucks I think my dad has it only his drivers door but we live in so cal.

OH, OH HO HO. THERE'S MORE.

i went back to look again and reinspect what happened to the paint.

it's nighttime now, and in the nighttime w/ my flashlight, i am able to see the coat of dust on my car (i drive very infrequently). with the sun shining this afternoon, i didn't see it b/c of the glare.

this is right next to the paint-crack in question. there are rub marks in the surface of the paint, nothing deep or bad. but it's not glossy shiny on spots.

see it??

see it?

that's the print of a fucking Converse All-Star.

likely not a hit & run. looks like someone was using my car as a nice seat, or platform to stand on. convenient for them. $$ for me.

not to disagree with mqqn but, the panel would not flex enough at that point to have the paint crack. It's too close to the crease at the top of the fender. That crease adds strength as well as a style line. The fender would have flexed at a much flatter, weaker point than that spot.

I suspect that a kid with a bicycle hit it. The bare steel ends of handle bars are rarely smooth and once the soft plastic grips are worth through from laying it on the ground, they get pretty rough. A slight bump would be like scratching it with the tip of a knife.

For the time being, get some black nail polish to touch it up and keep moisture from getting to the steel in case the zinc coating on the steel has been broken.

EDIT: With the added pic, keep an eye out for neighbor kids with spiked belts and Chuck Taylor All Stars.

Hi Midget -

Well that is just outstanding. So some jerk just kicked the front fender of your car.

I have seen damage like that before.

Just poor, I am so disappointed for you to have to be dealing with this.

Turning the channel to my life, I just came in a little while ago, I was watching the 7 year old boys across the street shooting pump bb-guns willy nilly around the neighborhood from their front yard. One of the little "&&&&"s turned the gun at me while I was on my front porch - he was aiming at his basketball backboard, but having no firearm safety training at all, not to mention one iota of parental guidance, he was going to shoot. I had to holler at him.

I'll be visiting the parents tomorrow evening when I have not been drinking and my blood is not boiling over.

I hope you get your car fixed to your satisfaction - it would be great if you could catch the vandal. Many times a store will let you review the security camera tapes with police if you have had an incident in the parking lot. Worth checking out.

Good luck and best regards -

Are the fenders on your car composite ? It does look like someone took a foot to it.

Either way, it sucks when that stuff happens. Years ago I had a guy pull up next to my Corvette, while my girlfriend and I were eating. He thought it would be cute to slam his door into mine.
They saw me start running out and took off. Unfortunately for them, my car was a lot faster than theirs, and I can drive.... I caught them :D

Man thats really a drag, i've had this happen to 2 of my vehicles in the past. For me it was cheaper to not report it to insurance and just get it done privately because of the high deductible.

Once was a kid on a bike that scratched a big line across my fender with his handle bars

More recently it was some teenagers hitting golfballs from their front yard towards other people's houses

Its even worse when there is no consequences for the person that does it, because they'll probably end up doing it again to someone else.

Ps if you do find out who did it, make sure he never uses that foot again

My first thought was someone kicked your car. A fairly common act of vandalism on various car forums. Seems that my intuition was correct this time. :(

:-/

thanks guys.

it is what it is, huh. i guess this sort of thing is going to happen in life.

filed a police report last night.

Yep.some idiot kicked it.
Get ready to dig deep for a fix.Shop around,I just had the my Dokota fixed. It was doing the normal Dodge clear coat thing. One shop priced it at 3300.00 (cab only-no bed but the bed is good to go) but I found a small good shop that did it for 1200.00.
