What happened to the giraffe scales?

I was playing around in the costume shop. Building different variations of the 110. I noticed the giraffe bone scale option was missing. Its the only one missing from the new scale options. The giraffe scales didn't seem to last long. I think it was up for 6 months. My question is why the disappearance of the giraffe bone scales? What happened? I could assume it wasn't selling well. But I'm curious.

All I know is if you see something you like, don't wait too long. Especially if it something out of the ordinary. I've noticed some scales come and go and not come back. Could be a supply issue or perhaps it didn't sell as well they wanted or maybe there was an issue with that material.

Giraffe bone is one of the hardest bone in the world. I can only assume that it may have been discontinued because it's a pain in the ass to work with. Anything really hard is brittle and it may have cost more in production than it was worth. Just my speculation.

Giraffe bone scales come from animals that died of natural causes. It's not as fashionable any more as it once was. In the custom sub forum, some "experts" sneer at it.

lucky for me I still have a damascus 976 woth giraffe bone handle.

I was smart to pick up a 110 in giraffe bone scale when they first came out. Ironically I was interested in picking up a second one before it disappeared. I was too late

If anyone's interested the giraffe scale option is back

I'm interested. I was just on the Buck Custom Shop web page yesterday and the Giraffe scales weren't there. I've purchased a Buffalo horn scale custom 112 as well as an Ironwood 112 recently. In considering my next 112, I've been wavering between the Black Palm wood and the Buckeye Burl. Well now, I also have the Giraffe scales to consider! Here's my one issue though: I'm having trouble justifying nearly $200 for a what is at the core; a 112. I really like the Copper version with carbon fiber scales done for the Buck Collector's Club, as well. Unfortunately, I just couldn't get myself to pay $300+ for a 112. My limit for a 112 seems to be around $150. I love the 112 so please say something to convince me otherwise.

OK, here's what I do. I have the $150.00 to spend now on a 112. I tell myself that I'll skip/fore-go purchasing another for a month or two to make up for splurging on this one. Believe me it works...I'm doing it now and have, for the past several knife buys:eek:. Preston
