What happens during a spa treatment?

Got my 500 in the mail today- got it "new" from amazon.... It wasn't new lol. It came with the box flattened and empty, the knife wrapped in tissue paper, and the sheath just bouncing around in the box-

I'm pretty sure I'm still going to keep it though, the hassle of returning it for a new one is a PITA and they only had 2 left in stock, so I don't want to be stuck without the 500 I've been craving for about 2 weeks now. I figure if I carry it in my pocket like I planned, it'll get dinged up anyway..

A ding in the wood like that would be buffed out if I sent it for a spa treatment in the distant future, right?

I just had some knives come back from the spa treatment (see my post on here, not too far down in the list) for photos.
I am sure they will fix that mark in the blade when they polish it up but as far as that little ding in the wood, not sure if they would take that out or not. I would think they would need filler unless they can sand it down without it looking concave in that spot but would they put a finish on it, not sure.
I know everyone is different but to me that seems to be a small little nick and I would not worry about it but it is your knife.

My buck 110's came back looking great. None of them had any really bad marks in the wood but they were old and the wood came back looking better so maybe buck would be able to lessen the appearance of that ding. Good luck!!

If it bugs you, and you can't live without it for a few weeks....

sand the ding out with progressively finer grits of sandpaper.
then use a buffing wheel with some compound, and it'll shine up like new.

I did this to some scales on a used Alpha Dorado with abused and terrible, terrible, terrible looking rosewood dymondwood handle scales.
when I was done, they looked shiney and new :)

The dymondwood seems to appreciate the buffing wheel :)

Also.... the spa can lessen the depth of the ding...

A few months ago I sent in a 192 Vanguard, I bought back in '93. It had a loose pommel and a pretty deep scratch on the wood handle.
The brass was fairly tarnished, and she had a dull blade.
They fixed the pommel, buffed and polished the brass and wood (scratch nearly gone), and sharpened her up to shaving sharp.

Yep....spa treatment is super awesome.

Before.....the scratches were deeper than they look in the photo.

After.... 20 year old knife, looking brand spankin' new, and super shiny, sharp as heck, and scratches/gouges in wood all gone :)

holy hell, these before and after pictures are amazing! they do a hell of a job there..... unbelievable, actually. it's a shame they won't refinish knives that weren't manufactured by them ;)

Here is a link to 110 Dave's brilliant pictorial expose of Dan's Spa at the Buck Factory in beautiful Post Falls, Idaho: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1095672-were-the-spa-is?highlight=BCCI

I watched as a 110 was re-bladed and brought back to life by Dan in a few short minutes. He talked while his hands flew at various stations within his small area. It was as if by magic that this crippled and down trodden user was completely transformed from something you would not be able to use safely into something you would be tickled and proud to display. Awe inspiring stuff you must see with your own eyes to fully appreciate. Visit the factory. Do it this year. You won't be sorry that you did. I am itching to go again ASAP.

Buss, the 119 was done over at Leroy's in San Diego... Not at Buck... Leroy was Buck's first Custom Knife Maker...
And he will do a spa job on any knife made my anyone, not just Buck... Just have to call him... He did some Case
other U.S. made knives for me...

Before...

After... most of them are done...

My understanding is that Leroy continues, today, to perform spa duty for some Buck knives sent to Buck. I'll see him in April, OKCA annual show, and ask him.
