So the specific knife in question is a ZT 0620 cf. But i also have another tanto that i want to sharpen so i need to figure this out.
I did some research before starting this project including posting a thread here and everything i read said to sharpen in two separate steps and to start with the primary "longer" portion of the blade first.
So i did this and have a nice hair popping razor sharp mirror polished edge. Next comes the tanto portion. I wanted to keep the same angle for the whole blade so i "tried" sharpening this portion at the same angle as the primary part of the blade and here is where i ran into trouble.
I spent over 4 hours working on this part of the blade with very little results.
My problem was the tip portion where the main part of the blade and the tanto meet. I couldn’t get the stone to make contact with this tiny portion.
Most of my time was spent with the main edge facing me although after several hours with little to show i adjusted the blade so that the tanto part was facing me. This is the part that confuses me and made me decide to stop and write this long post.
What happened when i moved the tanto portion to face me was the angle started to change outward toward the tip but back where the main part of the blade and tanto part meet remained untouched.
So basically i figure i have 3 options
1. Increase the angle that i am sharpening the tip at. I think this is why I’m having a problem. But i also dont know why my stones won’t just cut away material until i have full contact? I know 204p is harder than vg10 which is what i have the most experience with but these stones had no problem cutting away and re profiling the main portion of the blade.
2. As the title of the thread says basically start all over and use one continuous motion of the stone starting from the back and working to the tip like i am used to doing with every other knife i own.
3. Find a real man to do the job. Not really an option at this point i have so much time invested in this (around 8 hours now) i have to either finish the job or fire up my oxy acetylene torch and melt it down which won’t help me sharpen the other tanto in my collection. Option 2 would happen before this. Please no offence to those that do but sending it off to get it sharpened is a bit vulgar to me. To me it’s a bit like paying somebody to change a flat tire, mow your grass or change your oil. That’s just not me.
I have attached 4 pics
3 are of Spydercos that i have sharpened without any problem and another of a CRK tanto notice how it is perfect where the tanto and main edge meet. What am i doing wrong? And what do i need to do to accomplish this?
