What happens to Nitro-V and 304 Stainless weld on handle when heat treat

I'm making a knife that's 2 inches in blade width and 2.5 inches in tang width. If I use a 2.5 inches stock, then there'll be lots of grinding and wasted steel, so it's not very economical. Since it's only going to be at the very butt of the handle, I'm thinking about welding on a small piece of 304 or 316 stainless, it will literally has zero effect on the integrity if the knife.

Should I do this before or after heat treat?

I've seen some people recommend using silver solder. Which one do you think is better?

I’d just get 2.5” wide stock or buy a 4” wide sheet and nest them to make a couple. I’m assuming your are making a competition chopper based off your previous thread. I’m sure you’ll likely want to make more than one as you test things and make adjustments. I think you are going to create a lot of work and trouble to save a tiny fraction in steel.

I agree, just use stock that is wide enough. The difference in price is probably only a few dollars.
