what happens when you apply shellac?

I just saw an item for sale where shellac was applied to hemp. It looked great. My question is what would happen if you applied it to paracord? I know the general idea is that the paracord is there in case of an emergency but I'm curious what the results would be upfront? It seems that it would give the handle a finished look. I'd prefer to have some idea beforehand and would appreciate input. Regards, bib

My bad! I was referring to hemp and paracord being used for the handle of a knife.

shellac unless i am much mistaken is water soluble. It will turn a little lighter when damp.

Not water - alcohol. But it kind of melt little in arm, at least what I tried. So far what i found - carnauba is best for handle.

Shellac is not a very durable finish for exterior use, it is water permeable and thermoplastic (you use coasters on antique furniture to avoid white rings from water penetrating the shellac, or melting from the heat of a hot mug). There are some liquid epoxy systems that would seal the paracord handle much better, but would also mean the paracord would not come off the handle easily.
