What hatchet to buy?

I am going on a campout soon and would like to get a nice hatchet to bring along. I had a simple wood handled one for a while but it seems to have been misplaced. I am not looking to spend a lot. Any suggestions? I have been eying the estwing sports hatchet.

Eswtings are good, damn hard to break. Of course my automatic answer would be to buy a vintage american hatchet but y'know. Another option is a Husqvarna hatchet, fairly affordable (as far as modern swedish axes go).

Yeah, I don't use a hatchet all that much so a strong reliable one fits the bill. BTW, how would you go about sharpening a hatchet. File, grinding wheel, spyderco sharpmaker?

I use a file if it's really bad, most of the time I just hone it with stones. Sand paper works well too.

That helko looks nice. I may have suggested the German Standard hatchet because I think it is a better bushcraft axe, but it's out of stock, the one you chose is probably a better splitter which may be what you prefer for camp duty, and although you do not need a hardened poll to drive tent stakes, it is still very cool.

I Second the Estwing. A real work horse. Take the face down on a stone and you'll have a better slicer, chopper than splitter. DM
