What have I missed (recommendations sought)?

I'm sure there are brands and models I haven't looked into, so perhaps y'all can help point me in the right direction. Looking for a sturdy EDC folder, under 3.5" blade length (state law, bah!), very robust, good-feeling handle, clip or drop or spear point. What I have, and like very much, are a Greco Grifon, a Rekat Pioneer, a BM 943, and a Rekat Savant (obviously I'm not concerned with quick/slick action :-). I like the Pioneer's handle the best--fits my hand perfectly. But I worry about lock spring failure. The Savant is nice and light, fits the hand well, same concern. The BM is a bit more delicate than what I had in mind. The Greco is a wonderful piece but the handle is a bit too thin for my taste (yes, I have ordered the scales kit), and it's also just a bit too long for comfort in a pocket. I've looked at too many others to name but figure you all might send me to look at something I missed. Things like the Camillus EDC, BM 705, or Outdoor Edge Paragee are too small. BM 710 is too big. Price limit is $150, so spare me the Strider AR or Sebenza suggestions. Thanks a ton in advance. Oh yeah, I'd prefer a decent steel (e.g. 154CM, AUS-8A, ATS34.

I like the BM 943 or the 735 3.6" though or how about the 773.
I like BM because of the axis lock the whole action is smoother and the lock up is unsurpassed.

How about a Spyderco FRN Delica?...The blade is 3 inches of VG-10 stainless, and sells for WAY, WAY under your $150 limit.

Thanks glockman99; I haven't tried a Spyderco yet because frankly I'm not much fond of their looks, and the handles seem thin. But I guess I could wander down to the mall cutlery place and try one out.

You sound like you want a nice thick handle. I carry a MicroTech LCC, and that is definitely robust! I think you can find a manual LCC for less than $150, and even cheaper used. The trick is finding someone who will let go of theirs:D, as they are also discontinued, I think.

Good luck,
DD

This knife is designed exactly to match jurisdictions where 3 inches is blade length legality limit. It is as sturdy as it is possible to imagine in such dimensions and pretty comfortable to handle. Flat ground CPM 440V blade is excellent cutter. Compression Lock provides very solid lockup.
I’m not sure it’s obtainable within $150 price limit but it is worth to look onto it pretty carefully.

Or maybe BENCHMADE 690 if you would like somewhat prettier knife? this one would match all your specified requirements.

Here are a few that you might want to check out:
CRKT M18
CRKT M16
CRKT Bladelock (a little heavy but great lock and ergonomics)
Gerber Harsey Air Ranger (my current EDC and a great little knife)
Spyderco Zowada

Good luck,
Allen.

Kasy,

This is kind of off topic, but you mentioned that you have the "scale kit" on order for the Greco folder. Is this something offered by Greco/CQC Knives website? If so I missed it there and am very interested in where they are avalible because I have been pricing sheets of G10/Micarta from various supply stores to make my own.

Also on topic, have you looked at the CRKT Ryan model 7 (blade length 3.5) or the Craford Kasper folder (blade length 3" or 3.87, too long I know but it's close...). Neither has a "premium" steel, it's aus6m on both, but they are both heavy duty (and thick in the handle) and well under $150, you could buy both and have $50 left over.
Another choice that I don't know if anyone mentioned is the Buck Strider collaboration. ATS-34 steel and offered in a spearpoint in either 3" or 4" blade. Very heavy duty (and really thick) and depending where you buy from, I've seen them anywhere from $110 (+ shipping) to $140 at a retail store in the area.

I second the Microtech LCC. Alas, the LCC has been revived, this time with an S30V blade instead of 154CM. ;)

My suggestion would be an Emerson Mini Comander. They are built strong and are light in the pocket. Add to it the wave opening, and how could you go wrong?! Trust me - they are well worth the money. You will find yourself carrying it more than your other knives.

By the way, before I read all of your post I was about to suggest the rekat pioneer. It's one hell of a stout little knife. I would think it would be great for what you need. What don't you like about it?

I agree with allenC, I just got a Gerber Air Ranger II and I'm thrilled with it. It seems to fit your criteria and even has a cool name.:D

MOD trident or tempest. Not large knives but very slick well made, stable, and the coating they have now is great. Plus some of the best customer service there is if you should need it. Not ground overly thick either. Great edges out of the box. You should be able to find them right at the top of your price range of 150.00
