WHAT have you Done With your HI

Ok, was womdering what everyone has done with their HI's as for usage. Of course everyone knows that we all most likely have more HI's than we will ever use, but I have managed to use the hell out of my 15 inch AK. I used it to chop two full cords of wood which it did without loosing much of the edge. All I did was run a hone on the edge every half chord and it was almost shaving sharp. I threw it into a half plywood sheet several times (4) without a problem. It hit the handle once. No damage. Of course the blade is marred a little but nothing that can't be polished out should I want to make it look new. I was able to sev ere 3 inch branches with one blow and a couple of times I did that with a few that were almost 4 inches, but I think they may have already been cracked. Most of the wood was very dry and offered little resistance to the AK. With the wet wood I would go in at an angle and take 3 hits to crack or severe most logs in the 3-4 inch class.

The edge dulled somewhat by the end, but not enough that I would feel safe running my finger over it. A hone and it was very sharp again. There was no chipping or indenting of the edge except at the very tip of the blade where I think I hit the dirt or small gravel type rocks. It indented there but minimal and was easy to remove. A friend of mine now has it and will be using it to clear about a quarter acre with it of small trees.

With the exception of INFI and maybe CPM3V, There may not be a better big blade steel than 5160. My 1095 blades cannot take this abuse without chipping, at least in my old Ontario survival bowie which chipped quite a bit before it broke later on, due to my fault.

So what have you done with your HI???

I basically have done much of the same. The branches weren't as big, though. I will take several to deer camp during hunting season. Then the real testing will begin.:D

This while smashing 1 20" Sirupati into my concrete patio.

I think he meant GOOD things, Uncle Bill. :D

I haven't done anything with my AK yet, but going camping this weekend, and plan on touching up edge on sharpmaker before I leave, then probably keep it over by fire for chopping/splitting wood.

I butchered four deer last season with the 15in AK. It was too large to do a lot of the work, Although it slid through the flesh. The 12incher I got this year should be perfect. In my area of Wisconsin, CWD is an issue, so I did not cut ribs, or neck vertebra. (Note: don't smash through bone. I chipped the sweet spot several times.)

How deep were the chips?

er...'bout 3/8ths to 1/2 inch wide half-moon size and shape. Not a problem. See the BAS refurbish posting for a picture of the AK today. The bone was foreleg, and very dense, and the edge I hit with was the most brittle--duh.

If you notice in the pictures of goat/bullock sacrifice, the head of the critter is being pulled forward by a halter to fully extend the neck, probably to MISS the bone and severe the spinal column and flesh, etc.

My fault. (Never occured to me to return the AK. IT worked, I didn't.)

I used my 18" AK to cut the paws off some squirrels. (They were dead first :D ).

Not a very big challenge though. :p

Neighbors reset some gate posts couple weeks ago and
the gate wouldn't close after the concrete set. 18" Siru
worked great as a draw knife to shave off enough wood
so that it would close. Job looked good when finished
and the neighbors liked the khuk.
Regards,
Greg

Ooo, tanto point. How much fer shippin'? :D

I'll second the advice not to chop bone. I tried that and hit the softer steel of the recurve, there's still a little indent from that adventure :o . That was with my Gelbu Special; it has also been used to cut through deadfalls while trail clearing, and cleaving grapevines. It also makes a great home defense tool, very confidence inspiring. :D

I've chopped the hail outta well cured cow and horse bone with some of my older khuks with a true convexed radiused edge with absolutely no damage while the Busse E-Battle Mistress suffered impacts from chopping the identical same bone.
An axe edge beats the hail outta a flat ground and convexed edge every time!!!! :p :D :D :D :D

I used my 18" AK to open a letter the other day.

I also threw it, and chopped down trees. :)

Let’s see.

1. Chopped up pallets, to include the nails. The edge will take abuse if you hit it anywhere but the hardened sweet spot.

2. Lots of vines and vegetation.

3. Opened MRE’s.

4. Cut/chopped comm. wire. Note this is SS and is hardened.

5. Experimented with best ways to cut steel banding straps. If able chop into the strap with the sweet part that is hardened using the crate as a backing. If you have use the tip spear into the edge to induce a stress riser then slip the Khukri underneath and pry.

6. Pry the tops off of semi-rusted shut 55 gallon barrels. Apply penetrating oil to rusted joint after knocking as much rust as possible. Stab top of barrel with Khukri then start prying. Hit edges of barrel top with hammer or other hard object while prying.

7. Replacement for kitchen cleaver. Pound meats to thinner consistent thickness. Pry frozen meats apart. Cut ribs. Butterfly meats for the grill/smoker.

8. Others that CRS keeps me from remembering.

9. A little Arnis/Escrima and other martial arts traing.

I've killed deer with a .338 Win Mag, 220 gr and it has an effect similar to a RPG, I think.

I don't deer hunt with it anymore. :p
