Hi guys I'm new to the forums and kukris I've decided to get a kukri from himalayan imports based on some good reviews but I'm stumped on which type to buy. I'm primarily going to use this for chopping some tree branches, for collecting firewood and cutting away some bushes. I'm also going to use this when hiking and camping. And lastly, and less importantly, as a display piece. I'm 5'11 and weight 200 pounds. If anybody could assist me on a type of kukri and a specific blade length that would be great!

Welcome:)

I'm about your size, and I tend to gravitate toward the 18" versions. The WWII, AK, etc. However, for a display piece that is very functional, you might look at the M-43. Very good chopper but has that full exotic curve to it that is pleasing to the eye:)

You really can't go wrong:)

Once again, welcome:)

definitely one of those 3 mentioned. Welcome. You will be pleased with whatever you purchase, especially when you chop wood:thumbup:

I'm new, so take this with a grain of salt...

But, I've got an AK and a Chitlangi...

I much prefer the Chitlangi in the 21" version, I prefer the longer Kukri...

Real talk though, you can't go wrong any and all of the, are awesome..

FWIW, I would recommend the wood handle...

Thanks for your help guys i ended up going with the WWII 18" model with a horn grip (the horn was personal preference, sorry jsm11). Thanks again everybody! And does anybody know how long it would take to get to New Jersey?

I'm in Illinois and it's typically two days rarely three. I'm about half way, I'd guess three days maybe four.

I'm in MA and it's still usually 2 days. Every once in a while it takes longer for some reason, but I'd guess if she ships tomorrow, it'll get to you Friday. She ships via USPS Priority mail, which is usually 2-day service within the ConUS. Try to be patient, the wait is the hardest part!!

Welcome to the forum, I hope you love your new khuk!

Welcome and condolences in advance to your wallet, HIKV is very contagious, but the only illness which is a lot of fun to alleviate once in awhile.
The 18" WWII will definitely serve you well, but so will the AK, CAK, BAS, M43, Bonecutter, etc...
HI is just like Lays Chips, you can't just have one!
Auntie has a magical relationship with the USPS, shipments arrive surprisingly fast, and you will be surprised how your body gets all excited when it "eyes" that triangle box just waiting to be opened.

Good call, after 15yrs of collecting HI blades the 18" WWII is still my favorite "user" khuk and darn good looking as well. You will be adding several more for specific needs such as heavy chopping use, prepping for the zombie apocalypse, impressing your friends and family, scaring away door-to-door marketers and the like. Prepare your budget accordingly.

I'm happy for you, honestly! Darn near a hundred pieces and I have no favorite. Some I see beauty and others art, quality, ingenious, functionality, durability..... I love them all. That said, at least my most current favorites are those with heavily curved spines. Thanks to Auntie and her selection of Kami's to fulfill my wishes I believe I have two examples on route that some HI brethren might agree.

I always recommend the BAS for a first Kukri. It was my first and it taught me how to use a kukri, how not to use a kukri and led me down the correct path for susiquent models that I later added to my collection.

My thought process for recommending this model is that the BAS is probably the most uniformly made model available from any manufacturer so you have a realistic expectation of what you are going to get. Also, rarely do you ever hear of a BAS failing or having bad heat treat, I believe this is attributable to the fact that most people that get them, use them. And because this is a well know military model and design in Nepal, virtually every Kami has made tons of them.

The model is the smallest traditional model and is the easiest to learn on. Being a military model you can be sure that while it is not the best at any one task, it does all tasks reasonably well where many other models are a one task and done proposition. It is also the most packable Kukri you are going to find.

The BAS you get from HI will be a notch above anything on the market and no matter how many other Kukri you buy down the road, the BAS will always be one of your go-to blades. Mine is always with me and is still used often.

Good luck with your search.

Congrats on your choice and be warned as already mentioned, your finances will never be the same ;). I live in NJ as well and I just ordered a BAS from Auntie this afternoon that will ship tomorrow. I will be very surprised if it's not in the mailbox by Wednesday . I swear., I have never dealt with a company that had such fast and consistent shipping EVER! I don't know know what Auntie threatened the mailman with, but whatever it was, it's working!! Congrats on your ,,WWII model, I don't personally own one, but it's an HI so u can't go wrong. Unless I miss my mark, your gonna be looking for stuff around the house to use ur kuk on! Lol

If you look at tiny 5-0 Auntie holding a 50" Janawar on the home page like a pro. It will explain what influence she has. Behind her angelic persona is a Shera girl that can wield a Khukri like a Gurkha. She's a Tom boy raised by Pala. No further explication necessary.

What are the differences between the WWII and the BAS models? Besides obvious blade length and weight
