I sent my Small Sebenza 21 (my only CRK) to CRK to have my intials engraved on the back handle. I just got it back, and have been carrying a Spyderco Caly 3 CF for a month since I sent it off. I really like the looks of the Caly, and it is very smooth; However after having the Sebenza back in my hands, the quality, fit & finish, of this knife seemed to stand out even more than before. The smoothness of the opening of this knife (which many have described as hydraulic in nature) is so nice. My mom used to tell me - "sometimes you have to miss something to really appreciate it". Thanks to CRK for their great service.

good to hear you got her back my friend. I recently got my sebbies back from CRK as well, and I surely share your sentiment.

Cheer eh

Great story. I know how you feel, I thought I lost my Umnumzaan once when I went out for a few drinks worst feeling ever. Luckily I had left it at my friends house and it was returned in a few days...Now if I go out to the bars or anything I bring along my trusty delica. Id still miss it but its no Umnumzaan

Here a pic as requested. Sorry for the pic quality. They did a great job. Not too bold, but discrete & simple like I wanted.

It's interesting that your lockbar doesn't have the two little relief cuts in it. Has CRK stopped putting those there? Nice work on the initials. I guess you'll be keeping this knife now. ;)

Knife looks great!

Medic-What cuts are you talking about? It looks like all of my knives. If you mean the two cuts on the inside of the scale that allow it to "hinge" they are still there. I think you just can't see them from the perspective the photo was taken.

My small and large micartas have two smaller relief indentions on the lockbar opposite of the two larger curved ones on the inside. From looking at the photos on knifeart, I've noticed that the only models that have these notches are the inlay models, both Idaho Made stamped, and pre. Seeing this, I think the notches were put there because many of the inlay models have polished blades, and bead blasted lockbars. It's at these two notches where that transition takes place, so they're likely put there to give both a visual and physical transition point instead of just suddenly going from polished to blasted. Here's a quick photo I took of my large and small Micartas. Obviously, these handles are fully bead blasted, but I imagine that the handles are made as either inlay or not, with or without the inlay cutouts or not, and the ones with the cutouts get the additional notches on the lockbar. Just my guesstimation of course, but it makes sense to me at least... ;)

I asked about that once. IIRC, they serve as an index or sorts to help make sure the bead-blasting stops in the right place on a clean line.

IIRC from what I read, those cutouts are to make it so that the material of your pants isn't pinched too hard by having to go over the inlay, then immediately down over the lock bar under the clip. Because the plain jane's don't have an inlay, there is no need for those external cutouts.

The cutouts are way too small to have any significant impact on how hard your pants are pinched. The seam at the lip of your pocket is larger, and sits mostly above those cutouts. I'm thinking the reference point for the cutoff between bead blast and polish on the inlays is probably the answer. Either way, I didn't realize it was an inlay-only feature. In fact, I don't even think I paid that much attention to them in the first place, but when I saw the photo above, something about the knife looked "odd" to me, and I didn't know what it was (aside from the missing clip), so I pulled mine out, and immediately noticed the lack of those cutouts.

That's really interesting. I don't have any Sebenzas with inlays. I have seven Sebenzas, all plain except for one with graphics. None of mine have those lines so I supsect you are correct. In all the pictures I have looked at over the years I never thought about it. I have seen some that the scale is polished on that side except for the lockbar itself. I'll bet you are right. Pretty cool I thought the only difference was the inlays themselves.

The cutouts you are referring to are only on the inlay models. CRK has stated that it is there as a transition "zone" because some inlayed versions have polished handles, but bead blasted lockbar. (I cant find the specific post to reference it, but it is out there)

Edited to add, saw your later post where you pretty much nailed it.
