What I HATE most about buying knives is.......

The worst part about a new knife purchase is examining the knife only to find:

  • The knife scales don't match!

    Votes: 12 12.6%
  • The edge grind is wavy or uneven!

    Votes: 5 5.3%
  • Its not sharp out of the box!

    Votes: 16 16.8%
  • Its dirty!

    Votes: 1 1.1%
  • There's play in the blade (folders)!

    Votes: 61 64.2%

  • Total voters
    95
  • Poll closed .
When I first read that, my first thought was

we hate it most when our BF knife order doesn't go through. 😂

For the poll, though, I voted play. If there is blade play, it makes me doubt I can trust it, that I might get injured somehow by using it.

...all of the above? Well, I voted for bad sharpening, but uneven grind and blade play are my least favorite issues too. Dirt can be cleaned, even though sometimes there's just too much of it. Overall, a good knife, from my point of view, shouldn't have more than one mentioned issues out of the box. Truly good ones don't have any at all, but that's a rare case.

I chose "blade play", but that can be fixed with a hammer, unless it involves a Swindon key design.

Honestly, my biggest irritation is blade rap as I don't know any permanent solutions that don't involve disassembly or grinding away a portion of the edge. I want to buy a couple of victorinox folders but have not since both of my current vic folders (alox pioneer and a fieldmaster) have bad rap near the tip and I'm concerned about going 3-0 on vic folders.

Of the choices above: blade play.
My first thought was, "When the knife I want to buy sells out before I finish clicking the "buy now" button."
This too. I have given up trying to buy Northwoods knives. For the last couple of years this has happened to me almost every time. They sell out in like 2 minutes.

I hate the disappointment after looking at a million knives and finally choosing one only to find out the manufacturer and the retailer doesn't care at all about the knife they are selling. Chips, cracks, blades interfering with each other. obvious issues that could have been avoided if someone just cared when they looked at the product. Big names too.

I got to cross a couple manufacturers and retailers off of the list this year. Learning curve I suppose.

I have a pet peeeve, well known on this board, about customer service by a specific premium production knife maker.

I got pointed and called a troll by admins for expressing my views on this, so If you want to really kn know how I feel, contact me privatly and I'll give you an earful.

Sometimes the size is way off my expectation. It’s especially sad when the covers are gorgeous but I would not carry it.
