Im just about finished with a hidden tang, damascus blade skinner and I wondered what kind of finish or sealer you put on antler?? Im talking white tail here not Sambar stag.

Thanks to all the replies...this forum is a big, big help!!

After its finished and buffed out I like good old fashiond Kiwi shoe polish (the kind that comes in a little round can). I have been using it for years on stag,elk,white-tail,bone and even ivory of different types (use the neutral on ivorys) and it works great. If you like the color of the handle as is, use the neutral type but if you would like to give it a little more color use brown. I like the one that is called-Parade Gloss with silicone- because I think it gives a better shine. I use an old tooth brush to apply (gets in the grooves better)and then buff with a shoe brush or soft cloth. Try it I think you'll like it !!........John

I like super glue. Use a powder free vinyl glove to spread it on.
Tape the guards and buttcap. Put 2-3 thin layers on and thats it. Buff the edges to smooth them out and you are done.

If using deer antler or elk scales or in the round the first thing I do is saturate the sponge of the antler with ultra thin super glue to prevent future moisture accumulation or displacement from humidity changes. Min-wax wood hardener also works good for the sponge, but hard to find.

Shape polish and Mothers carnauba cleaner wax for a final waxing.

Thanks for all the good tips ...Jim ..I visited Idaho this summer...loved the Saw Tooth Wilderness area...those mountains look look a lot different from the ones here in the east...

Some great fishing holes up there. Just waiting for the steelhead season to open in the spring. They are some rugged mountains and takes a pretty hardy fellow to hike in that area.
