Seller shipped with 2-3 day priority mail. tracking tracking number shows they shipped it to Boston by error and now its says “in transit to next facillity”
as of yesterday.
Was supposed to have arrived yesterday.
He sent it by signature required but no insurance other than the $50 they give you for free.
Im just wondering... in this situation what happens if PO loses it?

Give it another day and see what the tracking details say.

USPS won't do anything right now anyway, not for a few more days.

It's NOT lost, it's in transit.

I had a Hinderer that had the “in transit to next facility” status for 6 days straight in the same facility, but with some calls and trips to the local Post Office here and a help from the shipper we were able to get it out of Post Office purgatory. I'm guessing you should still be able to get it, just late.

I ordered a knife (not a CRK) from a retail reseller and USPS tracking said it was delivered but I hadn't got anything. Upon notification of "delivery" as per tracking, I contacted seller to let him know what happened. He told me to wait it out and then file a claim with USPS. After doing so I asked for a new knife or refund to be sent and seller told me it was USPS fault not his and he was not responsible for the "loss".

I was out the knife and my money because the tracking said it had been delivered.

Usps claim process got me nowhere.

Liability for shipping is always on the seller in my opinion.. They elected to not ship which means they decided to self insure- Risky proposition.
If it's lost, that sucks..but nothing you can do about that as a buyer.
IF that is what you are talking about.

as said although frustrating give it a couple days see if it gets back on track it usually will ... and if not ... this ...

Most packages show up eventually (even up to two weeks later), I would never ship a knife without signature confirmation and insurance, but it's common knowledge how difficult it is to get USPS insurance to pay. If sent uninsured its the seller's responsibility to cover the loss.

I;m betting it will show up, eventually. USPS tends to "mis-route" items sometimes. It's like the box just gets thrown in the wrong sorting bin or something? I had a knife that was coming from Idaho to Seattle so not far at all. Took a little over a week for "2 Day Priority". The knife left Idaho, went to Massachusetts, then to Hawaii and then finally to me in Seattle. The good news it's still early. I suspect it more tracking into will update within another day or two.

Ya, if one ships by signature required one wonders if lost... then who signed for it?

I asked this exact question at my local PO the other day.

After some waiting period (30 days, I think?) the seller has to file a claim. They will then pay the insured value - and this is where I understand a problem could lie - IF the seller has some proof of the value of the lost item. A sales receipt or PayPal record of the transaction should suffice. But as I understand it, they will only pay the actual value you can show, not necessarily the value insured.

For example, I did a trade the other week, for a knife approximately worth $375. I insured it for $400. But because it was a trade, I have no paypal transaction record with a dollar amount. Given this was a knife I bought second hand, but actually benefited from some appreciation and the fact the guy I traded with really wanted the knife, I was trading up. No way I could prove the value, and probably not even prove what it sold for originally. As such, I actually wasted money insuring it for $400.

The signature required protects the seller as proof of delivery. It does not protect you, the buyer, nor does it substantiate a claim in the Post Office's view.

All my opinions, and I'm no expert, but it was not a great confidence-booster when I started asking questions.

? Did USPS send it to Boston by mistake or was it addressed to Boston. I have had packages go through Oregon on the way from NY to FL. so if It is USPS that made the mistake they will likely resolve it. As long as you are getting tracking info I would not worry. When they say delivered and you have no knife then there is a problem.
As previously posted getting you the knife is the sellers responsibility and if they don't insure it they self insured.
Also if you paid PP G&S (which I hope you did)you are covered there also.

I worked for USPS for a little while and as much as I hate to say it I’m not to surprised your knife was mis-sent.

I worked at a local post office in North Carolina and would have Mis-sent packages all the time but usually from around the North Carolina state. It was less common but I would have California,Colorado doesn’t matter how far away sent to my post office on accident. I’m not sure why or how the processing units mis-send the packages that far away but it happens when there dealing with multiple thousands of packages a day.

GOOD NEWS is that what ever the last post office that made a scan on the tracking number given to you. should scan your knife as “mis-sent” then ship it out on the delivery truck back to the distribution center and be on its way back to you

Most things usually show up even if the tracking looks jacked. I have had things delivered that still showed some random status elsewhere. I have seen things stating they were one place then all the sudden they checked in where they should.

I also agree lost things are the responsibility of the seller. Regardless of what they put in the sale post about insurance extra blah blah it's on them. They should build the cost of insurance into the sale price if they aren't willing to cover a potential loss out of pocket. They are the ones to have to file a claim if lost anyway so it's on them. PERIOD.

If it doesn't show up then the seller should refund your money. Now, if it were to show as delivered to you and signed for and the address matches yours then that's a different animal. They would still need to track to see who signed for it, etc. but if it was delivered to your address then it gets tricky to lay blame.

USPS is notoriously bad getting packages from A->B consistently, on-time, without detours. I had a package sent from Atlanta to Tennessee and it went back and forth to NY<->GA 3 times over the course of the week and finally was received in TN after almost 11 days. It's less than a 4 hour drive and it took them 11 days. I was freaking as the seller as it looked like I was pulling a fast one on the buyer. My words met calm ears and all turned out ok.

If you paud via Paypal Goods & Services and it does not arrive you are covered by them. Once scanned as delivered you are out of luck. Seller nor shipper is responsible for items stolen off a porch or mailbox which sadly is a growing crime now days

Thats why I always ship or receive by signature required and to my office where there is always somebody to sign for it. . Its only something like $2.70 extra.

I’m not worried yet as tracking shows it hit Springfied and went 1.5 hrs East to Boston.
Last tracking updte now shows it came from Cleveland OH and hit Springfield MA. Im 1.5 hours West of Springfield MA. So instead of traveling West towards me they sent it East 2 hours to Boston, MA. Now today a few days later it finally says arrived at Albany facility and onto final destination. It will probably be delivered Wed.

I only ship to my office as well. Guranteed somebody will be there to receive AND no questions from significant other.

Kids are not starving and we have seperate bank accounts.

I think the last time I put a lost item claim from the PO was 15 years ago and it took them like 3 months to finally pay the claim. Thats why I stopped using them in favor of Fedex (the best) or SlowPS (the worst).
But now that I started selling knives, it became very easy to just print the USPS 2-3 day priority mail label right from PP that automatically takes the fee from your checking account, puts the recipients address in, check off sig required for like an extra $2.70 plus the small box size for $7.20 (when able to use a small), box it up safely, slap the label on and drop in the mailbox down the block from me.

I've quickly learned though, it's a Hell of a lot easy to buy knives than sell knives. Buying you just send a PP and just sit back and await your purchase

Sounds like the USPS circle pattern, where they circle around your location once before delivering it. I know this guy in Canada that I don't think he has ever received a package direct to his location. He watched one special grail knife continually go back and forth over the border before finally arriving.
