You guys will have to tell me. I don't know anymore.

"Whats this got to do with khukuris... everything." Uncle Bill Martino.

Why do we allow gun posts? What has that to do with khukuris? Nothing?

Why do we allow smoke requests? Thats not related to khuks either right?

We were a community, thats what UB meant IMO. Whats it got to do with khukuris? Everything.

Andy,
I am new here so forgive me answering and if your question is strictly rehtorical, again- fogive the answer. In common use "Cantina" is thought of as a hang out of sorts. One where folks can have a cool drink and discuss what is on their minds. If this is not in the spirit Mr. Martino intended it, my respectful apologies and I will not frequent again.
Bill

Maybe I shouldn't have started yet another discussion in our 'OT' discussion section. It seems there is nothing to discuss what with 24 views and no responses yet.

I really would like some justification of why that thread was moved. I'm not owed it, I know, but I consider you, Nasty, to be a friend of mine. Am I wrong?

I have a few quotes to placate myself in leu of a discussion on the matter. They're quite interesting.

I've created a HI Cantina forum for you guys. I want all off topic threads going in there from now on.

Seems like an easy rule to follow. I don't see how it was violated. I certainly try to follow the rules here at BF.

Here was some of the reaction to that change:

Although we can still keep Uncle Bill's philosophy to heart when posting anywhere on HI: "What does this have to do with khukuris? Everything!" (-:

N.

Can we?

I winder what Uncle Bill Martino would have had to say?

What would he have to say. I wasn't blessed with his acquaintance, but I do respect his memory.

It may give us a few headaches as we try to figure out if some of the threads are about knives or are not about knives.

;)

The thread was not about knives, so I placed it in the Cantina. Was I wrong in doing so?

This makes me sad... I have hardly ever visited the cantina since the change over... This forum was so much like the Bark River forum with its diverse postings, and now it has become just like all the rest ... <sigh>

I'm certainly not qualified to answer your question, and seek an answer to the same question with this thread. There is good folk here I CAN say that much for sure. Lots of knowledge given freely too. If that interests you, then please continue to frequent it. Maybe someone will come along who can answer your question soon.

This post is to try to help people understand that are new and not pointed at anyone inpaticulare. Hope it is found to be usefull

The main H.I. Forum is for talking about things dirrectly related to the company and it's products. The cantina is for everything else. Yes, the stuff we talk about here can be related, but doesn't always deal directly with business. HI has one of the most active forums here, mods must clean up once in a while cause we on the HI forum have crashed the servers before. So the cantina was started so they can more easally clean up the chit chat (cantina) and preserve the product info.

I post gun stuff here at times because I know Munk and a few others mainly stay here and would otherwise miss out. Plus I want to keep with the spirit of things. Will probably take some gun stuff to the Gadgets and Gear forum so others can see it too, then post a link here. Did that with a computer related topic and the mods were okay with is so I will probably keep that habit up.

Sometimes depending on subject my room mates can discuse things, but most of the time it becomes a match to see who's right and who is wrong. Even if you are in the right and can prove it they will not listen. So I come here to talk. Other times they will listen and we talk for hours sharing ideas. Sometimes I get the feeling that they think I'm a little crazy for hanging out here so often at times..... If they only knew how nice it was, they might be here too. :)

Am glad Spark started the Cantina for us. Thanks! :D

Heber

Damn, Heber, if the gun threads disapeared from HI I'd actually get more depressed than I already am. Keep them up.

Heber

Me too. I always thought so too.

Lemme clarify. I am not against off topic posting. I just don't understand why my thread was moved. It did not comply with the rules of the Political section, and I was called out on that. It had not gotten out of hand in any way. And it was only a few hours old in the first place. If its not OK to post off topic in the Cantina which was created for off topic posts...

I can't even finish that sentence. This is confusing.

Thanks for posting, btw, Heber.;)

Hey Andy, what thread was moved? Someone moved a thread? :O I must have missed something.......

(after looking around) the UN thread... Guess the mods thought it might get to political. I was reading yesterday afternoon and thought it was doing okay even though I probably won't talk about such things much. Bummer dude.

I'm on vacation from work right now and trying to join in as much as possible. IF you like gun threads..... He he he... You'll probably like the other one I hope to start this afternoon. Got to finish taking pics first. ;)

As for the moving of your thread, I hope a Mod see's this thread and posts as to why it was moved. I'm curious to know.

Nasty is the mod here and BF owns the site so IMO whatever they see fit to do is alright with me:thumbup:

However I do agree with FB that sometimes the road signs are a little faded and it makes it hard to determine if you are in the right place or not when you post.

I understand the frustration. There are certain things that I want to discuss with a certain group of people, and not the melee of slings and arrows that inevitably comes with posting over on the general political forum. The level of discourse in the HI cantina is generally a) more courteous and b) more intelligent than what you get elsewhere. I find it unfortunate that raising issues for discussion with your "buddies" is frowned upon.

Andy,

Even moderators are human. Perhaps this is fortunate, because, despite my essentially peace-loving nature, I might have to beat the ever-loving snot out of any perfect people I met.

(I guess it would depend on how smug they were: but then, they wouldn't actually have been perfect, eh?)

Don't go 'way just because of one mistake, brother.

Hmmm.

I can say that I respect their authority and thank them for their service and providing us a place to BE, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that I agree with anything they decide to do just because of what they own and what they do....

The Cantina is for chitchat between friends that has no clearly defined forum such as politics, gadgets, pirates, general complaining and so on.

Political threads have their own forum set up with rules (you'll have to look them up yourselves as I don't go there) to help keep things running smoothly. You can go there and use it appropriately and have fun. Folks that are interested in political discussion are only 1 click away such as The_Shadow...and you seemed glad to see his input again.

For the record, I never claimed to be a replacement for Bill, Rusty, Howard, munk, Yvsa or anyone else. FWIW, none of them could ever be *my* replacement either...we are all individuals.

Followup comments can be posted in the Whine & Cheese section...

Firstly, no one is asking you to be perfect, or Bill, etc. Lets not get dramatic.

The Cantina is for chitchat between friends that has no clearly defined forum such as politics, gadgets, pirates, general complaining and so on.

This is new. No general complaining here? No talking of gadgets here? No guns? Or just no politics because you don't like reading that material?

You put my thread there, and it was not conforming to their rules. I did not post the thread there. You did. Who needs to read up on their rules?

I said something nice to The_Shadow, why does it bother you?

Followup comments can be posted in the Whine & Cheese section...

Is that a direct order? Are you moving this thread too? You moved the last one out of lazyness, why are you moving this one? Will you continue to post into it so we can get this over with? Or are you done with me?

I've created a HI Cantina forum for you guys. I want all off topic threads going in there from now on.

By having so many off topic threads in this forum, you guys have made it so it's impossible to prune out the non-knife related stuff when I want to prune the deadwood. As such, when I prune we have to lose some of the HI forum information as well.

Please limit HI related topics to this forum, and the off topic stuff to the cantina from now on.

Why is it that these don't jive?

I'm finding it hard to put into words what the HI forum has been about, at least in my opinion. But light talk among friends - while an important component - is nothing like the most important component for me.

The magic of this place at its best, is a magic that's related to Dharma - the sense of duty and compassion that led Bill Martino to start up a company which frankly, flouts the rules of most profit-making enterprises. Because it has a different primary purpose than profit.

The HI Forum is a place where sometimes, we really plumb the depths. And where people have felt safe to do so. Where we can crack absurd jokes, and also talk about the meaning of death, or how pain may be necessary for growth.

This place is the community we make it - with the amount of our selves, our lives, our hidden places, that we're willing to collectively invest. Where one thread will be about pirate ducks, another about Mausers, and another yet about transformative suffering.

For the kamis and their families, it really is all about khukuries. Whether we're talking about how to temper a blade, or how to afford medicine for your sick child. Their lives are moulded by the chance thing, the sheer good luck, of having had someone like Bill Martino care enough about humanity to find a place for them to claim the dignity of work.

Our lives, if we want them to be, can be moulded by the same chance thing - the chance (like happened to me) of stumbling across a community like this one, where perhaps the one thing we at first thought we shared in common was an interest in khuks. But where we found, at length, that what was held in common was a whole lot more.

I'd want to try and keep it that way. But a Buddhist orientation knows that all things will change ... including the character of the HI forum. If it grows away from its roots in Dharma, though, I for one will send up smoke.

1. I moved it to the Political forum because of it's nature.
2. I am not responsible for the manner you presented it in.
3. My alternative was to delete it...in hindsight, I suppose I should have done just that.
4. I mentioned The_Shadow as an example of having the greatest number of folks participating in discussions.
5. Name calling will not be tolerated.
6. I suggested that you take follow-ups to the W&C because I am not a Mod there.
7. Continuing your attack on me in this forum will result in this thread being locked down and other administrative actions as deemed appropriate.

You already know that you are free to talk to Cougar or Spark if you wish.
