I find it could be a lot of things... usually something about a well made knife of another maker that gives me a twist on something or that humbling check to do better work. let's be honest, there aren't any "new" ideas in knives (no good ones at least) so I know for me I end up taking an idea I admire and see if it will benefit my knives.
For me it's a well made well thought out tool.
Nine times out of ten it's not the prettiest blade but the one that will see actual use.
A friend of mine now past used to make what he called an "ugly knife ". forge rough spine copper gaurd and pins all textured so you couldn't see any scratches from hard use with a hickory or maple Handle stained dark.ill see if I cann find a picture latter.
these are what inspired me to try to make my first knife a god awful attempt at a curing implament that I now hide at the bottom of a draw in my computer desk.
