What is a 3 inch contact wheel really good for?

I have a 10, 8, and a 6 inch contact wheel for my KMG grinder. I use them all. I use a small wheel attachment with 1/2, 3/4, and 1 inch wheels quite a bit. I aquired a brand new 3 inch contact wheel and put it on a a spare tool arm but can't figure out what to do with it. Does this size wheel do anything special or easier? Any opinions would be appreciated. Larry Lehman from Bakersfield P.S. I love hollow ground full tang hunting knives. LL

They work good if you want a nice deep hollow grind on your blade bevels. They work especially well for dagger grinds where you don't need a lot of height in your grind. An example that comes to mind is the subhilt fighter featured in steve johnsons video.

I use a 3 1/2 inch wheel and larger one. When my belt is not that aggressive on my larger wheel I use the 3 1/2 inch wheel and there is still life in the belt. Seems the smaller wheel allows for the grit to open up and grind better. Plus good for daggers, profile, and false edges.

I use mine for hollowing out the middle of the tang on a full tang knife before I taper it.

Markb, Thanks for offering to buy my 3 inch wheel but they are not that expensive. I paid $65.00 from Beaumont metal works.. I would have to offer it for less and the shipping would be at least $11.00. I made a tool arm out of 2 inch hot rolled steel and drilled and tapped it for work rest and axle for the wheel but it weighs 16 pounds and would cost a ton to ship. You might as well order one from Beaumont. I think I will keep it for the one time I need it. Maybe I will start making daggers. Larry

I think you're smart to keep it, you can't have too many tools. The Steve Johnson Sub -Hilt DVD is excellent, very detailed step by step start to finish, great grinding tutorial. Just looking ahead, I'm not ready yet, still struggling with the Loveless Hunter.

The 2, 3 and 4 inch wheels are great for making guards.

Grinding fullers on swords....:)
I can see where such a thing would be handy for guard and handle shaping, as jdm61 said.
