Hi there, my name is Stephen and I'm wanting to get a new knife. I'm looking at the Buck 500 Duke and I'm thinking "Why do I want that?" What sets this knife apart from the 112 Ranger? Somebody knows, please share.

Hi Stephen,

It's your choice what type of knife you like and want to carry. You can't go wrong with ether a 112 or 500, just depends on what you like. The 112 can be had in clip point or you can find one with a drop point, it is best carried in a sheath due to the weight of a brass/NK frame. The 500 is slimmer, lighter and carries well in a pocket and is only in a drop point. They are both about the same size length wise. As I said it's all up to you and your likes and needs.

The Duke and Ranger both have a 3" blades. The Ranger is heavier. Either comes with a sheath. The Duke being thinner and it's drop
point blade calls me. Both knives are heavy duty suburb, walk the dog size knife. I carry my Duke a lot and nobody is intimidated. DM

Just because she's pretty, doesn't mean that the 500 is just a Sunday-go-meeting knife. It definitely shares some heredity with the 110 and 112. I have one that I bought new in 88, it has more miles left in it than I do.

I prefer the 500 over the 112. 112 doesnt fill any holes I have that the 110 or 500 can do just as well or better for my uses. that said I have a few 112s and I can see why some like them as much as they do..........

They are very strong duty knives. The Duke was first offered with a stainless frame and polished 440C blade. With burgandy micarta and old English stamp. The 112 was never offered
in that configuration. I like the contour lines of the Duke better. DM

If you collect the 500 has many varieties in handle materials..but in the last few years the 112 is catching up.

I tried a magnet on the frame of my Duke and no attachment. But yes on the blade of S30V. Don't know why that is.
Could the frame be nickle silver? DM

Either 300 or 400 series stainless is non magnetic. I don't remember which one. So, no, it could still be stainless. My modern (last 10 years) 500's state they are stainless on the coa.

Mine is one from the Heritage Series. So, it could be a stainless frame. They have
olive micarta handles and s30v blade. DM

I like the Duke most of all Bucks. IMHO, its the handsomest of all the Buck standard production knives. Its strong as an ox, both light and heavy enough. I carry it in slacks and shorts. Sadly, though its my favorite, I only have 3 of them.

I think it's too heavy for most pockets. But then, I like wearing a sheath on my belt.

My new 500 Duke was crafted perfectly. I am wearing it now, at work.

Now I shall have to get a 501.

Sure I don't pocket carry mine. I like carrying it in the sheath. I'm glad you like it. DM

I actually like my 501 more than the 500. But I also like the 112 way more than the 500. The 500 is definitely a solid knife and I'm glad you got a good one :thumbsup::thumbsup:

This thread needs more pics! Here’s a pretty one (not mine):

Don't worry, I think they are all sold out. I just came across the pic looking for cool versions of the 500.
