Wow my head is spinning. I just got a sharpmaker and was trying to read up about how to sharpen. Ive come across the term back bevel a few times and was wondering what is was. In some threads ive read people argue about angle as which to sharpen Like 17.25 vs 17.75 ..lol...whats a good general angle. I think sal said in the video 40 was good. also what is stropping and how does it work, and cant you dull an edge if you dont strop properly. I know i ask alot of questions, thanks for putting up with me guys .

If you read the main sharpening websites (Joe's, Steve's, Chad's, John's, etc), you'll see that they all mention sharpening a blade with two angles.

Let's assume that you want a final edge (primary edge) of 40 degrees. You would first put a 30 degree back bevel (secondary edge) on the blade. Then you would come back and put the final edge on at 40 degrees. There are several reasons for this, but the main reason is that on touch-ups, you are only sharpening a very small area and not having to remove very much steel.

Since you're asking what a back bevel is, I highly recommend the following dissertations before you go any further:

Stropping is also covered in the above dissertations.
