I've seen thi referansed several times and can't find it on the HI site.:confused:

BAS= Basically Annoying Spouse:rolleyes: ;)

Really it stands for British Army Service.

Josh said right. 15" BAS, IIRC at about 1& 1/4 lb.

Not the actual make/model issued, but made by HI instead of Khukuri House ( largest arun in Kathmandu ) and to what should be vastly higher standards.

I kind of scorn the BAS because it doesn't have the 'rightness' of the 16.5 WWII to me. Some purists agree with me, others don't. To me the BAS is equivalent to the 308, where the WWII is equivalent to the 30-06. A 10% differrence in power?

I'm telling you what I feel, rather than that I have a right to make that judgement.

I'm a BAS fan. Especially the Bura and ! BAS's I just got in the last few months - both lithe and pointy.

My Sher WWII is more beefy, and definitely a worker before a fighter. But then it's an 18-incher, which are known for having long, thick handles. I also like the BAS over my 15" AK - also a chunky blade by Shankar. AK has more belly that gives it a forward balance and clear chopping power, but the BAS has a more neutral balance and is absolutely deadly on green wood and brushy stuff.

Two other things in favor of the BAS - light weight and compactness. If I'm going to haul a khuk all over creation, it' s probably going to be a BAS.

I believe Rusty has said he prefers the 16.5" WWII to the 18" model for reasons of proportion and balance. He may convert me yet - I still haven't found a 16.5" WWII in my hands, but it's definitely on the BUY list.

I have a BAS by Sher. I really like it. The edge is sharp but durable. You can use it like a machete or chop, but I really wouldn't want to chop anything bigger than about 3". Would take too long.

Like was previously mentioned it is light enough to pack. I have used it to cut firewood while backpacking. Great knife.

I have never had a WW2.
