What is a better steel ,S30v or the Damascus used by Chris?

Hi all,

I am going to buy a large seBenza. I want your opinions on the following:
1- What is better steel in edge retention and sharpness and general performance, S30v or the Damascus used by Chris?

2- What would inlays do you recommend? I have seen 2 designs. One is the normal one 2 strips of wood, the other is the one piece annual edition. What are your thoughts?

I would appreciate it if you have some pictures.

Thanks.

Just a couple of comments about the wood inlays. First, the double strips are available only on the Classic model, while the single strip is available only on the Regular model. Second, for some reason, the wood inlayed Regular is way more expensive than the Classic. It's what keeps me from buying the Small Regular with Black Palm inlays that I want so bad. Cannot justify the extra $150.00 for the darn thing, no matter how nice it looks and I don't like the Classics.

s30v will give you way better performance and easier maintenance too.

S-30V will be far more difficult to sharpen than the Damascus Sebenza(sometimes just a steel rod will do on Damascus), won't hold an edge as long as the carbon steel will, will be more brittle/hard - and is more likely to chip and less likely to return to true if bent.

The only drawback to Damascus is it will rust more easily, and it isn't cheap.

agree. I meant easier maintenance in terms of scuffing and re-etching. with s30V, there's the stonewashed option, which is rather scratch resistant. with the damascus, it's quite difficult to remove the scuffs on your own and re-etch.

IMO, S30V for a user, damascus for something pretty. Damascus can cut well, but it's harder to maintain than S30V, and less durable for normal cutting use.

Thanks for the rwsponses

The damascus used by Chris is stainless isnt it? So we have S30v, High carbon damascus and finally, stainless damascus.

Chris does not use High carbon damascus that could out berform S30v. He uses stainless damascus that is inferiour to s30v. Am I right?
