What is a Buck knife "collector"???

I read in the BCCI Newsletter Chuck Buck's comment on the Blade show; he says "I never tire of...taking in...the fantastic Buck collections...Each of these...is unique as each represents a theme..."

I don't consider myself a collector; I have no particular theme. I accumulate what appeals to me for one reason or another. None of my knives (Buck or other brands) could be grouped together to show any particular feature, or progression, or evolution. They just look nice (or work well) to me.

So...What is a Buck collector???

Does a Buck "collection" have to have a theme???

What do you think??? Are you a "collector"??? What's your theme??? (Pics not neccessary!)

FWIW: I have sunfishes/elephant toes, stilettos, folders, fixed blades, survival, work, display-only, hunting, tool, and many other knives in my accumulation...

I think a collector could be anyone who has more items than needed to do daily work :D
If a guy has a few pocket knives I wouldnt say he is collecting them but if he has a different 110 for everyday of the month I would say that could be collecting :D
I do not believe that a collection has to have a theme, "your" collection is also unique in its own way!!!!!
I think an award winning display has to have a theme though. My Buck "collection" doesnt have a theme, I just love Buck Knives!!
My display does have a theme.
A display can also be just knives that look awesome or appeal to the "accumulator" in their own way!!!! I used to accumulate 119's that all had a different handle material and blade cutouts, etchs etc... I had to focus a tad though, there are too many different 119's out there.

Really??? Too many 119 handle materials to collect???

How many did you have before..."focusing"... :p

Sorry I forgot a few things in previous post :D
I only had 5 or 6 different handles... Many other 119 variations though!!!

I like what Jim said about a collector being someone that has more than needed for daily work.
As for me, I prob only have less than two dozen of 'em, but I collect 110.

I consider myself to be a collector. Mainly cos I have more knives than I will ever use so to speak. And I have knives on display and ones that will never ever be sharpened... so therefore I am a collector. Sure I have users...but I have way more knives that dont get used. I have some on the way which are not going to get used.

I have a user folder and a user fixed blade (battered old SOG Seal Pup which is battered - just broke the tip off it)

And being in the UK... knives are frowned upon.

So Mav = Collector...

I have been collecting for less than a year. I started off with 110's and have about 30. It was hard for me to focus on and remember their Versions and Variations. So, I began collecting the 700 series pocket knives, as well as some special editions. I hope to exhibit this Fall in Portland and will develop a theme at that time for my exhibit.

I am not a collector, but I've always like Buck knives.

I say I'm not a collector because I have no goal except to buy Bucks that will appreciate in value and decorate my life....and always working knives, never fancy stuff.

I go mainly for 120s since they are the biggest and most striking traditional Bucks and I happen to think they're beautiful.

I sure wouldn't call me a collector, though.....I rarely pay the prices that collectors will pay. I'm just a Buck loving bargain-hunting Buckvestor.

I had an idea last year for a display (too small to be called a collection) of Buck 110's...I wanted to get 5 of the different blade steels, all with the same bolsters and scales...and make a glass & wood display of them, with identifying cards & descriptions, etc...the different premium blade steels would be my theme... ;)

The idea would be that if displayed at a show, people in the know would stop and look...others without a clue would just walk by and think "five identical knives...ugh..."

But if I were to display five vastly different 110's, say with different bolsters, different scales, it would detract from the blade steel theme...and would in fact, have *no* theme...since they would all be different...

The only collection of Buck knives that I think might be interesting to build would be one of every type of Buck knife made...but then I would end up with some knives that I think are not worth having...

So I will probably just keep accumulating the ones I think are interesting...

Like a Buck military bayonet...which will likely be my next eBay purchase [of knives anyway]... :D

I like others here collect 110's and all but one will never be used, they just look to damn good and like Maverick in the UK knives are also frowned upon over here in Australia, you need a "legal" :jerkit: excuse to carry any type of knife no matter what size it is.

I am a collector of Buck knives.

I first started in the mid sixties "accumulating " Buck fixed blades.

In 2006 I fixtated on 124's,then drifted to other older buck knives, then newer,
then older.

This year I was determined to stay on the 124 theme....until the 2007 Buck Catalog came out:eek:  .... then I bought "every" :) new Custom that Buck made in 2007 and some production knives. There went the 124 theme:D

So my theme is now "no theme":D just accumulator collector.

What is a Buck knife "collector"???

My two thousandth of a cent:

Buck knife collecting polarizes.

One side is pathologic (all to have), the other side is commercial (all to sell).  :D

are there different opinions??

Still kinda new to this addiction but I started out with only 112's.........and now I'm starting to accumulate to other models.:D

I collect 110 and 112 I do prefer certain types for example I have several Michael Prater modified. I like them the way they look and they are 110 the folder I like better than all other folders.

Is it a theme? I don't know and don't care its my money and my knives. I buy what I like I sell what I'm tired of it's not a way of life but it is one of the joys of life.

Hi Trax,

What is a collector?......well I think if a body intensionally goes and gets multiples of something......he might be a red neck!!!!!....oh...that would be pick up trucks and six packs of beer...sorry.

Funny you are thinking about this trax. When I first found the BCCI and this site....I thought how cool it would be to set up a display and maybe one day show it off at one of the knife shows. Then like you I discovered and looked at the categories......"categories"....I thought you just put your cool Buck knives into a well laid out display".......No, no, no, I still don't know just how they came up with these categories and what should go into said category. I don't think I have enough of any one category to fit into one of the current categories......but, I'm working on it. Like you trax; I buy what I like....so I'm all over the place.....no focus....However, I'm having fun and enjoying what I have. So I guess I'm an undisciplined accumulator/collector. I need to go to one of the knife shows to see some displays.

I started out collecting mostly 110's, but since most of the 110's I still would like to get are either out of my price range or simply very difficult to find, I started to branch out in order to satisfy my hunger to accumulate more! I thus have a few fixed blade knives with a leaning towards the 124 and several of the newer folders. What will come next is anyone's guess. :o

I’m with you on that one Mike. I started out wanting one of every traditional pocket knife pattern. I found that Buck 300s would give me a nice selection of patterns and my focus shifted to Buck 300s. I don’t come anywhere near some Buck 300 collector’s collections but I got to the point where it was getting hard to find a new knife so my 300 collection got, to some degree, supplanted by a 532 collection (to expensive to ever get very big) and a 110 collection. So, now I have three collections to work on. I also like and collect Grohmanns so I should be able to find enough stiff to keep me juiced.
