What is a custom knife?

Every time I think I'm no longer a newbie something else comes along. I see Strider under Custom in some shops, and Production in others. Does custom mean "hand made by the person whose name is on the tin?" Or does it mean "made entirely in the shop (no outside parts)?" Or does it mean "unique, not same as any other knife made?" Or does it mean "designed to the buyer's specifications?" Or...

Are stock Sebenzas and Striders custom?
How about a stock Hinderer or Randall Made?
How about a Ritter Grip?
If I take a BM Grip and drill a hole for a lanyard does it suddenly become a custom? Any takers? :D

What do you guys think makes it a custom?

This topic has been beat to death, but I believe the word “Custom” is inappropriate terminology in most cases. It should be “Handmade” or "Semi-handmade" or "mid-tech" where applicable.

Custom Knife:
This is a $250.00 blade that you tell your friends you paid $500.00 for.
You tell you wife it cost $125.00...

I like that :)

For me custom knives are those made by one maker and can be customized for the customer. Knives like chris reeves and strider are what I would consider semi custom. These often allow some limited customization and have parts made by different people. I would consider my yuna to be fuly custom

I have two knives that I would consider custom, both I didn't commission, or in anyway contribute to the final product. The only reason I consider them custom is because each knife from the maker is one of a kind, hand forged, an no knife will be exactly like the knife I hold in my hand. Personally since Striders and Sebenzas follow a specific pattern, and you could own two exact same blades, I really don't seem them any different from BM Gold Class. But that's just my opinion. Maybe something like a Ritter M4 RSK Grip with Wilkins handles, tho would be "custom". Just depends on what YOU want to call it, I suppose.
