What is a custom production knife?

I see production knives here that someone has modified and then call it a custom. Is that the right use of the word?

Production knife + dremmel or new color = custom? Isn't that what is called customized or modified?

I'd call it a modified production knife. IMOH a custom knife is something that I can specify my own materials, my dimensions and my design. Anything else is a hand-made knife. Just like buying a suit, if you alter a suit to fit you it's still not bespoke.

I think it's the right word for it. It doesn't have to be modified by a professional to make it a custom piece. Homemade changes can be custom too.

I may be wrong though, English is my second language. Bad English is me first.

There are some production knife manufacturers who offer a basic model, which one can "customize" by adding things, such as serrations, clip point, different color epoxy finishes, stone washed or bright finish blades, jimping, etc.

I don't care for the common use of custom that I see here alot. I think handmade is more accurate. I'm in agreement with orixa. I think custom is used too loosely. So there are few real custom knives, ones that are to my specifications. Most are handmade knives.

I think Emerson knives could be considered this in a way? They offer different clips, screws, thumb disks etc for their knives which gives the owner limited factory customization options.

Production is standard. Custom is made from scratch. Production custom is like saying new and improved, it can be one or the other, but not both. A knife made on the production template but modified is customized, not custom.

Well put.
