i want to know what is a good substitute for a gun? i don't have a permit. i what to put it in my BOB.

For emergency small game harvesting, snares and a slingshot are a great combination in a small package.

I'll second doc's notion ... but throw in a fishing kit. For defense, add in a high quality OC (pepper) spray in a ballistic stream or spatter stream formulation.

Another gun.:)

If you can't have one, or don't want one, don't worry about it. People survived a long time without guns.

I don't know where you will be going or how you are getting there. Don't bother bringing your fishing gear if you're heading to the desert, but fishing line is always handy and hooks can be useful.

Is you knife a small city legal knife or a larger outdoors knife?

A walking stick could be used for defence and is useful if you are hiking out a ways.

Since it's a BOB, I assume you don't mean long term wilderness survival... in which case a high-powered low upkeep air rifle in .22 is awesome- silenced if possible (though the legalities of that are grey). For self-defense, put a cane in your BOB and remember that a thrown hammer makes an effective ranged weapon. A large knife or sword could do the trick too! ;)

If you're only going to use it when you bug-out then just get a pistol and don't sweat the permit. If things are bad enough for you to flee your home then I think a permit would be the least of your worries. And I would recommend .22 Ruger automatic pistol for survival/hunting purposes or a .45 auto for a self-defence/combat pistol.
But if you're dead-set against a firearm I guess a pellet gun with CO2 cartridges would be handy to harvest small critters like birds and squirrels.

IMO, It is a dangerous idea to place an unfamiliar weapons system in a BOB.

A weapon system tempered by neither a knowledge of the system's limitations nor the training in it's effective use will not be an advantage in an emergency situation, and may well endanger the lives of yourself and your loved ones.

One must never think of a weapon as a "magic wand" to be waved at trouble, but rather as a last-ditch effort to neutralize an unavoidable threat.

Only experience or extended tactical training can accomplish this mindset.

(The above refers to all systems of a "weapon" and a "user", not just firearms.)

That being said, many localities do not require a permit for long arms (i.e. , a rifle or shotgun). If you are comfortable with using a long arm, a full-stock, short(18") barrel pump-action shotgun such as the mossberg 500 or the remington 870 can be valuable for defense and hunting.

Conversely, carrying an obvious weapon such as a full-size long arm will make you a target for both law enforcement and criminal elements.

Get a tomahawk and knife. You fill two needs with it, as well as providing a good utility axe. The fighting methods are simple, quick, and very deadly. Just watch the Patriot or Last of the Mohicans. That stuff really works. I just learned some at the Riddle of Steel and everyone there was very impressed with the speed and efficiency of the two weapons, plus you can throw the hawk with just a little practise.
