Hello i am new to this forum and i would like to where i can get a good heavy duty folding knife preferably under $40.00 but i am flexible on the budget. I want a knife that i can trust but not cost so much that i wont want to use it much. i want the feeling and some power that a fixed blade would be capable but i prefer a folding style knife. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks For the help

Maybe a Buck 110? You should be able to find one at just under your price limit.

If you like the traditional looks of a Buck 110, I'd say go for it. If you're looking for a more modern folder, with G-10 scales, one-handed opening capabilities and a pocket clip, I'd recommend the Spyderco Tenacious. I lost the first one I bought, but I liked it so much that I bought another. It's priced similarly to the Buck 110, at around $35 online. The Tenacious is really a solid knife with a great price.

I concur with the others....the Buck 110 is classic Americana, hell for stout, and you`re gonna want one in your collection someday, anyway....

IMHO you may want to think about adding about $20 bucks to you limit and take a look at the Benchmade Grip. You sound like the lock is a big part in what you are lookin for.
The Grip has the axis lock and it is just about the best locking system on the market.

The Benchmade Griptilian would be a good choice if you raise your budget to about $65, there's also a Cold Steel Recon 1 folder. The Recon 1's are tanks and have many stories of doing impossible tasks at a great price point.

Im thinking about the SOG Flash 2 any comments?

The SOG Flash 2's are nice knives as well, but for the price and size I would recommend the 551 Griptilian from Benchmade.

Since you are new I don't know how much you know about blade steels and materials. The Griptilian has a blade made of 154CM steel, a very good steel which holds an edge for a good amount of time. The Flash 2 has AUS 8, which is a good "medium" and all around steel. Most people would prefer the 154CM of the Griptilian.

There's also the locks. You mentioned wanting a knife that you could trust. The Axis lock on the Griptilian can withstand 1000 lbs of pressure before giving out, whereas I've been told from representatives at SOG that the lock on the Flash and Trident folders is roughly 32 pounds before it closes. That kind of speaks for itself :p

Hope this helps, J.

Kabar Mule. It is freaking tough. and no blade play some like some of the above knives.

You posted while I was typing, I would also back this choice up

This is one hell of a knife for the money :D

I'm Plus one on both the 110 and or Alpha folder and the Cara Cara G-10... May want to look at the CRKT M16 Big Dog as well....

I am going to go out on a limb here and say take a look at the Kershaw Needs Work. Speedsafe one hand opening, modified wharncliff blade, decent steel, a real workhorse of a knife and it is right in your price range.

Wally World still carries the ID-made Buck 110 for $25 - $30 at local Academy Sports - maybe $40 at Bass Pro. Great bargain, super knife. The Kershaw OR-made Scallion and Leek are under the $40 limit, as is the Junk Yard II, as well. It pays to shop.
