Hi Ya'all,
It's been a while, I still REALLY enjoy cruising this area
smile.gif

I've seen them in the knifemakers supply books, seen them them at knifemakers supply tables at shows..... Those big rectangular magnet things called knifemakers magnets!
I guess I was afraid to ask, WHAT THE HECK ARE THEY FOR AND HOW DO YOU USE ONE

????
I've been at this knifemaking thing for a while know and CANNOT quite see how or where I would use one!! If anyone uses one, finds them usefull or even HAS one PLEASE let me know!! He11 I'll even buy one if someone says to give it a try

i have seen these too. I think you put them under a platen or flat surface on surface grinder to help hold the knife or steel in place. Neil, would D2 make a good 7" santoku kitchen knife??

Taz,
I have two D2 knives that I use in the kitchen. One is a paring knife and the other is a clever. Neither are at all thin enough to be flexible. The paring knife is at FULL hardness and holds its edge VERY well. I would hate to try to sharpen it without my belt grinder and strop

The clever is also holds up quite well cutting up whole chicken and other boney stuff.
Both have a patina color to them but don't really rust.
I'm not a kitchen knife expert but the ones I have work great.

geraldo hossum uses them......are you sure its not knife grinding magnate......like you are!!!!!!!!!!

I have one that I use to hold the blade when I taper tangs. I also use an Ironwood push-stick sometimes though, so it's not vital.

I do use it sometimes to hold the blade while knocking off heavy scale with my 6X48, but with your access to surface grinders, that would be silly for you.

Tom,
I never considered myself a knife grinding magnate but now that you mentioned it, it does have a rather nice ring

I know they wont hold my Talonite or Stellite blades. Ya think they make a special magnet for those materials????

Nick,
I use a push stick (bloodwood), it gives off a nice cinammony smell when it gets hot!!
With the pressure I put on the tangs against a fresh 36 grit belt......I'd like to see if the magnet would hold?? Maybe I'll get one the next time I call Sheffields.

Neil, great to see you back in the forums!!
I use a knifemaker's magnet when I'm sanding the flats of my blades or cleaning up steel. I guess you big timers do that on your surface grinders!

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

keep using that stellite and pretty soon youll be a talonite magnate like rob simonich and others!!!!!!

Shop tip for magnets. DO NOT use a 100 pound magnet to hold your blade and try to grind on your disc grinder that has a steel disc. Been said before but worth another mention.

when i started knife making i bought every thing i could at yard sales and always keeped my eyes open for what my neibors were throwing away. i came across some old stereo speakers with 6" magnets. i took out the paper and bent the frame into a handle, works great for holding the steel on the 4x36" for clean up. cost zero.

L6,
No surface grinder YET but soon. I have access to a good one at work. As a matter of fact the only thing it gets used for is MY knife blades!!
Alright, I see the intended purpose now but I thought that burning and sanding the tips of my fingers was part of the fun

I also hit the sides of my blades on my 4" belt sander.
I also found a magnet that will probably work. I'll give it a try later today or tomorrow.

Neil,
At one time I tried to use magnets to actually "hold" the blade or flat stock while grinding. This prevented burned finger tips but I felt I lost some of the control I had so its basically back to burned finger tips but thats OK too since I have lost some of the nerve sensation in my finger tips from being burned so much.!!! Just kidding of course.

One thing I did notice when I used a magnet for flat grinding. It does maintain equal pressure since the platen is magnetic. That is one benefit, maybe....

One very useful thing I do with them is to place the magnet in my vise and it is strong enough to hold the blade while I do hand sanding or filework. Like what L6Steel does, I also use the magnets to hold the steel for getting the bark off of flat stock on a 6 X 48 grinder.

CL,
I just tried the magnet I a have and it's NOT strong enough!! It holds the blade pretty well but does NOT pull through the blade and belt to the platten. I think your idea of holding it in the vise to do filework is GREAT!! THANKS!!!!! I might mount it to my pana vise base and get rid of the little vise that's on it.
I'll get a good one from Sheffields next week.

On the topic of magnets, my blades have been coming out somewhat magnetized between the knife holding magnet and the magnetic jaw pads on the vice. I seem to recall a 'demagnetizer' that could be made from an old dead motor or something. Any help or cautions appreciated.

i have one of them magnets, i stuck it to my wall, haven't ever used it, anyone have a good use for em?

Rob,
A demagnetizer is available from Sheffields for about 40 bucks. I had one made from a motor and it didn't work worth a DAMN!!

regarding demagnetizing blades, i have heard that a hard knock on the floor or another hard surface should get rid or the problem.
Something about re-aranging the molukules.. molykules... those tiny things inside the steel. in my oppinion it works with screwdrivers, but i dont know if any of you would be banging your blades against the floor.

Good Luck.
