what is a lanyard for ?

On larger fixed blades, I make the lanyard long enough to go around my wrist so I can get a bit more momentum in chopping and snap cuts. Other than that, I've always been under the impression that the lanyard is made to go around your wrist to prevent the knife from flying out of your hand if you lose your grip for some reason.

I think it's also to find the knife in your pocket in case you don't have/don't want to use the pocket clip and maybe to add a light capsule thing (can't remember the name) to find the knife in the dark.

Some people tie a longer laynard to their belt loop so they don't drop a knife in the water.

Thanks for that link Guyon. I've done a few of those myself but there are some other really good ideas there.

A proper lanyard is more than just for grip. They are also survival cord in case of an emergency. When tied certain ways a lanyard makes for a convenient way to carry 3' to as much as 12' or 15' of cord on you at all times. In a situation where you needed to tie a skid to pull out a fallen friend that was injured or game you bagged deep in the woods, or just for emergency shelter or a splint they can be quite handy.

Of course they also work to aid in extracing the knife, finding the knife quicker or wraping around the hand for a more secure grip.

Of the top of my head, most common ones:

1. Retention - keep from loosing the knife by looping it a variety of ways in you wrist or fingers
2. Deployment - some folks use it for tugging the blade out of its sheath, like when its deeply concealed
3. Aesthetics - excellent braidwork or leatherwork can give it a nice "tail" to add to the "ooooohhh and ahhhhhhh" factor
4. Handle extension - like J. Davey said above, to some degree, it can give an extra bit of reach for when you swing the handle in chopping or snap cuts
5. Tactile reference - especially in the dark for when you are groping for your knife
6. Knife Hanger :p

i thought it was a way around the concealed knike laws .. If the knife is deep in your pocket and and the police see the lanyard is it still concealed ?
Thanks for all your inputs :)

It depends...can the officer tell that the lanyard is attached to a knife?

If the answer is no, then it's probably a concealed weapon. People attach lanyards to keys as well as knives.
