What is a Molle Back?

Forgive my ignorance. I've just been recently introduced to the awesomeness of RAT knives and finally realized that these make awesome outdoors knives. The thing that confuses me is the whole Molle system. I have loops on my packs but never used them as they were intended. So when does one use the Molle back for the sheath and when is it best not to use one? Thank y'all.

I use the MOLLE back when carrying the knife on a duty belt (the velcro portion is perfect for that), vertically on a regular belt, or to attach the knife to PALS webbing on a pack or any such gear that has the PALS webbing.

The only time that I haven't used the MOLLE sheath back is when carrying the sheath horizontally with MOLLE locks or when using the belt clip on my RC3 sheath.

The PALs System is what you see on the Ballistic Vests we soldiers wear, as well as on most tactical packs, and a few other places. It's basically a ladder of webbing sewn on to our vests at regular intervals which allows us to securely fasten gear to ourselves. The Molle locks are what we use to fasten said gear to our vests. They slide through several of the loops on our vests and interlock with loops on the piece of gear you are attaching. It's a pretty decent system (much better than alice clips), and if you attach a piece of gear (ie a sheath) to your kit using the molle locks, it's not going anywhere and is really stable. For the uses you might have (assuming you don't have a ballistic/tactical vest) the molle locks can be used to attach the sheath to a belt or pack, and should form a pretty secure connection. Anyway, hope that answers your question. Have a good one!

MJF, thanks for the excellent description!

Thanks for ellaborating MJF!

Is that system compatible with the "daisy chains" you see on daypacks and such? Sorry for the ignorance.
