Been on this forum for a number of years now but it only just occurred to me that I am not sure what a "quiet professional" is. (My first instinct is a Ninja, but I seriously doubt that is what Chris is referring to.)

So what is a quiet professional anyway?

I'm guessing it's someone like me, who does their job day after day without having screamed in agony once. Never whilst at work anyway.

Professor.

someone who does their job, remains humble and dedicated, and does not use their authority or experiences in the furtherence of their own ego.

We lost an awful lot of quiet professionals 9 yrs ago, didn't we?:(
FDNY:thumbup:

US Special Forces are often referred to as 'Quiet Professionals', hence the Yarborough and Green Beret Knife.

Usually an SF reference.

However, I have realized when dealing with intelligence guys the ones who NEVER talk about what they do for a living fall into that category in my mind.

The new breed of SF is a lot different than the old one. Nothing against them, just different time/place.

This is an interesting thread thanks for bringing it up. My thoughts have always been that a "quiet professional" is someone who uses the best equipment but doesn't like to show it off. He uses it because he knows its the best a guy can get and that is enough for him, he doesn't buy something big and flashy and show it off to everyone who walks by. I feel that Chris Reeve knives really embody this idea. Take the plain Sebenza 21 or regular, if a non knife nut were to look at it, it would look basically just like any other metal handled folding knife they've ever seen. However we buy them because we believe that its the best production knife on the market and thats what we look for.

This has always been my understanding of how CRK uses the phrase as well.

I'll echo the above, in that I've always understood it to mean someone who's traditionally (required to be) quiet about what their profession is. Not a lot of "Hey... I blew up that enemy HQ and got paid for it.... high five!!"

I can see the 'quiet-about-their-choice-of-good-gear' also fitting but that'd be
a coincidentally correct definition.

That was my take on it.

It is my sense that the true, top of the line operators in special operations rarely, if ever talk about their work. What will all the fakirs, it's reached the point that when I hear a guy boasting and bragging about his service in the SEALS, para jumpers, Special Forces (forget Delta--they do not talk at all), etc. I am inherently suspicious.

I have a friend who did 20 in special forces and now works for private security(Blackwater type) and never talks about his work while home.

One that goes in harms way and never blows his horn so that you and i can cruise the internet and sleep soundly in our own beds.
