Is a variant a new knife based off of a specific design eg. SH-E? Or do you send in your existing knife and have it modified? If you send it in what is the average cost and wait?

Thanks for all of your help,
Jim

Where's Porkerson when you need him.;)

A variant is done at the factory before the knife ever makes it into a customers hand. This way it can be heat treated and finished after being modified.

FOS nailed it with his answer.

A variant is a modification of a current or sometimes previous design. It may be something as simple as a sharpened top edge, or significantly more detailed like serrated spine, recurved edge and flying the handle. Sometimes the variants have a strong resemblance to the knife they variated from, sometimes it is difficult to tell what they began as. However, they are always done prior to leaving the shop for the first time. And as a side note, I only consider them true variants if they were done at the shop. No aftermarket variants for me.

I hope this helps

:D:D

Thanks for the replies. What kind of modifications can be done to an existing knife. I would like to do something different to my SH-E but I don't know what yet. It already has a symetrical edge and a penetrator tip.

You could sell it to me:D

"what is a varmint"

well i guess the easiest way to discribe it would be to just take a look at darkhog.:)

Jim.... I sent my CG NO-E in for modification.... stripped the crinkle coat, re-profiled the edge, ground to a clip point with a slight(very slight) harpoon, false edge along the clip point grind, and a birds beak skull crusher, finished out with a nice bead blast finish..... kept the standard black grips though!

My advise is to call the shop.... they might not be taking any knives for modification at this time..... if they are, I'm sure they could help you out with just about anything you might want done!

Jay

P.S. the modifications costed me about the same as I payed for the knife to start with, but that's not to say the same will apply now! Good luck, and you might want to put some serious thought into it before you have the knife changed...... you can take infi off.... but ya can't put it back on! kinda like a tatoo.... once it's done, it's too late to change your mind!

"Variants" are the by-product of many hours of . . . . drinking!!!! ;)

I began making Variants in the mid-1980's. They came about as the result of the boredom that results in hand-grinding hundreds of the same blade style. After a while of doing the same thing over and over and over and over. . . insanity kicks in, and Variants shoot out!!!

Variants are not a new idea. It would be nearly impossible to find any legitimate and prolific custom knifemaker who hasn't made hundreds of "Variants" in his/her lifetime.

I do a number of very unusual Variants that we at the Busse Custom Shop call "GFDs" (Grinder Front Designs). I really can't explain what happens when I grind these, and can usually only apologize for the end result!!! ;) :D

"GFDs" are the result of a complex series of events that involves, drinking too much, passing out face first into the grinder, and then, with the blade trapped between my forehead and a flesh-eating 60 grit ceramic belt, writhing in a fury of pain and bloody gore until I regain consciousness and fall to the floor. I don't make a lot of these due to the long physical rehabilitation required to recover from the physical damage sustained with each blade.

Yours in Nuclearly Painfull GFDs!!!

Alcoholics Anonymous may be able to help keep this from happening. I hear they opened up a new center .1 miles from the Busse Combat Shop :D

Hard to believe but the making of GFDs (Grinder Front Designs) have actually improved Jerry's looks.

And we are all very greatful for the improvement otherwise :barf:
